Portrait Of Walter Jackson

LP (Item 20567) Chi Sound, 1983 — Condition: Very Good+
The last studio album from Chicago soul legend Walter Jackson – recorded shortly before his untimely death, and offered posthumously as a loving "portrait" to his talents, with a special message on the back written by Jesse Jackson! The feel here is similar to Walter's other Chi-Soul work of the period – strong, mature work done in a style that recalls the work of Teddy Pendergrass – no surprise because Teddy was one of many singers who owed a great debt to Walter for opening the way. The set includes the wonderful groover "Touching In the Dark", plus "If I Had A Chance", "Someone Saved My Life", "It's Cool", and the eerily prescient "I Want To Come Back As A Song".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(NOTE – Cover is lightly stained and wrinkled at the bottom 3 inches.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Manchild

Power & Love
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1977. Very Good+
Early work by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, working here with the young Chicago group Manchild – a funky soul outfit that was one of the city's last big new acts of the 70s. The band never really broke the charts that strongly – and on their funky cuts, they sound a bit too much ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1978. Sealed
The standout classic from Curtom disco diva Linda Clifford – and an album that showed that Chicago could rival Philly in the clubby groove department! Linda has a proud presence that really matches that of her better-known sisters in the City Of Brotherly Love – and she's singing here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Cooke

Night Beat
RCA, 1963. Sealed Gatefold
Wonderful mellow work from Sam Cooke – and a set that's recorded with a sound that's very much in keeping with the "night beat" that you might expect from the title! In fact, there's not so much a "beat" as a simple easy groove – a gentle sort of "night" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jon Lucien

Song For My Lady
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint-
Excellent jazzy soul stuff by one of our favorite singers of all time! Esther Marrow

Sister Woman
Fantasy, 1972. Near Mint-
Very righteous work from Esther Marrow – an overlooked soul singer who works with a hell of a lot of pride and power! The set's an overlooked gem in the Fantasy catalog of the 70s, and it's one of only two secular soul albums cut by Marrow – and quite possibly the best of the bunch, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager

Love We Have
Mercury, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Duets between Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager – done as serious, adult oriented soul tracks, one side of the album in an optimistic "The Love We Have" setting, the other in a sadder "The Love We Had" setting – both of them handled in a mode that's far far different ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carrie Lucas

Horsin Around
MCA/Constellation, 1984. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice set from Carrie – produced with a bit of an electro flourish on the keys, and lots of sweet Solar production from labelmates like Reggie Calloway, Bill Wolfer, and the enigmatic Fenderella. Titles include "Hello Stranger", "Somebody Said", "Superst ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Had A Love
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
A great one from Ben E King's "Supernatural" comeback years in the mid 70s – recorded at Sigma Sound with a really stellar approach on both the groovers and the mellow tunes! Ben's really letting his vocals open up on the set – going for that richness that was sometimes held ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Sharrock

Black Woman
Vortex, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best-ever Sonny Sharrock albums – and one of the few that really captures the fresh genius of his approach! A great recording from the 1960 Essen Jazz Festival in Germany – one that has bassist Oscar Pettiford playing with Bud Powell and drummer Kenny Clarke (all of whom were living abroad at the time), and being joined by Coleman Hawkins on a few tracks. On the trio sides, although Powell's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Now!
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! The record's got all the soulful swing of Stitt's classics for Roost, but also hits a slightly more lyrical groove at ... LP, Vinyl record album
