Talking Book

LP (Item 20561) Tamla, 1972 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
One of the classics, and an album that's filled with a sense of majesty and power that will knock you dead – despite the kind of silly cover of Stevie sitting on a hill, playing in the dirt! By this point, Stevie knows he's on top of the world as well he should – and he's honing the sophisticated experiments of the previous few albums into a tightly woven pop sound that would pay Motown a huge dividend for letting him take chances with his music! Includes the big hits "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" and "Superstition", plus the amazing mellow synthesizer classic "You've Got It Bad Girl" and the fuzzy funky "Maybe Your Baby". Great stuff, and one that won't let you down!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Later pressing in a non-braille gatefold cover – T6-319S1. Cover has light ringwear, edge wear, and is bent at the bottom left corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Kendricks

Slick
Tamla/Motown, 1977. Very Good
Smooth mellow grooves, in the style that Eddie pioneered, and which he still did better than most. The album's a great batch of tracks with production by Leonard Caston, who also produced some of Eddie's earlier works, and the set's pretty darn great all the way through. With the cuts "Someth ... Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Away We A Go Go
Tamla, 1966. Very Good
A key set in the second chapter of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – that time when the group moved from the mellow ballads that were their first early strength, into some dancefloor stormers that easily made them one of the most favored Motown acts of the time! Smokey definitely takes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Special Occasion
Tamla, 1968. Very Good
Smokey and the group do a great job on some lesser-known numbers – all presented with that wonderful warm polish that The Miracles brought to soul, a sound that's always great, even on a lesser-hit album like this! Titles include "Give Her Up", "Special Occasion", "Ye ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1970s. Near Mint-
Great cuts from the second decade of Marvin Gaye's career at Motown – really magic numbers pulled from that 70s period when he was really taking off with his music! Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Flying High Together
Tamla, 1972. Near Mint-
Excellent 70s work by Smokey and crew – sort of their way of showing the emerging east coast vocal stars how much talent they still had! The record has a sweet, slightly modern sound – with an approach that hints at Smokey's later Quiet Storm sound, but maybe a bit more laidback ... LP, Vinyl record album
Scepter, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! Minnie Riperton

Minnie
Capitol, 1979. Very Good+
The last full album recorded by Minnie Riperton before she left our planet all too soon – and a killer batch of work that really has us wondering how great the world of soul music would have been, had Minnie stuck around to keep on growing into the 80s and 90s! The set's filled with the kind ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Tex

I Gotcha
Dial, 1972. Very Good+
A pivotal album for Joe – and one in which he turned his previously mellow southern soul style into a heavier funkier sound for the 70s! Includes the title cut, which a whole generation rediscovered in Reservoir Dogs, plus "Give the Baby Anything the Baby Wants", a big sample cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield

Got To Find A Way
Curtom, 1974. Very Good+
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice Rushen

Pizzazz
Elektra, 1979. Very Good+
Brilliant work from Patrice Rushen – one of the records that not only helped break her out of the jazz funk ghetto, and right into the mainstream – but a set that also had a pretty profound influence on the progression of soul in the early 80s! Rushen sings as well as plays keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Loleatta Holloway

Queen Of The Night
Gold Mind, 1978. Very Good+
Loleatta Holloway's emerging here as the queen of the disco – trading the southern soul of her early years for a more full-on club groove! Given the strength of her vocals, the approach works great – and if anything, the setting really helps Loleatta find an even better space than ... LP, Vinyl record album
