Melancholy Baby

LP (Item 20446) Coral, Mid 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

An oft-overlooked jazz vocal session by Mary Ann McCall, with superb arrangements by Johnny Richards, and a nice batch of tracks that have a surprisingly dark quality to them. Titles inlcude "Blue (and Broken Hearted)", "Lover Is Blue", "Melancholy Nights", "Am I Blue", and "My Old Flame".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono maroon label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam with aged tape remnant and a tiny peeled spot at the bottom.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Easy Living
Regent, 1956. Very Good+
Mary Ann McCall never cut very many records in the 50s – but all of them are pretty darn great, and this one's no exception! The set's a great balance of mainstream swing vocals and slightly more soulful arrangements – penned and led here by Ernie Wilkins, and played by a group that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Like Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66? Then you'll love The Carnival! One of Oscar Brown's great ones, recorded live at the Cellar Door in Washington before an enthusiastic crowd of hipsters! Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+
A unique moment from the legendary Jimmy Scott – a one-off album cut for Atlantic Records – recorded after his initial 50s fame, and decades before he'd finally get his due, much later in his life! The album's got a style that's a bit more mature than Scott's initial sides – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hartman

Voice That Is
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
At the time of this album, Johnny Hartman definitely was the voice that is – a singer with a new level of maturity for the 60s, and a voice that's far more masculine than the geeky look of the photo on the cover! Hartman's sound here is smooth and warm, but never in a too-commercial way ... LP, Vinyl record album

A rare one from Nina Simone – a set that was issued during her years on RCA, but on the smaller Stroud label – run by husband Andy Stroud!
