Amazing! Although this album's a soundtrack to some goofy California surfer film, it's actually a killer batch of off-kilter jazz tracks composed by Bud Shank, and with a sound that's unlike anything we've ever heard from him! The frontline of the session is Shank, Bob Cooper, and Carmell Jones – but forget any conceptions you may have about West Coast Cool for a set like this, because Jones' off-kilter hardbop approach is in full-tilt, and the set grooves with an amazing modernist edge. Part of this may be due to the presence of Gary Peacock and Dennis Budimer in the album's sextet grouping – but we actually think the real genius lies with Shank, who scored the whole fershlugger thing, and who plays with a sinister tone that just cuts us to the quick. One of our favorite west coast albums of all time – honest! Titles include "Jungle Cruise", "Ala Moana", and "How Hight The Makaha". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

- Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
- Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
- One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
- May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
- May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
