Noted Rider

LP (Item 203598) Time Wind (Germany),  — Condition: Very Good+
(Stereo pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+
(Mid 60s brown label Folkways pressing. Cover is missing the paste-on photo, and has some surface wear, splitting in the seams, light smudge in front, heavy shelf wear, and some spotty stains and yellowing from age in back.) LP, Vinyl record album

Muddy Waters

At Newport 1960
Chess, 1960. Sealed
Muddy Waters makes a classic appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival – playing a folksy set of blues in the years before the festival had turned more strongly towards that sort of music! The performance is surprisingly well-recorded – at a level that's similar to Waters' earlier studio ... LP, Vinyl record album
Nighthawk, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Great work from the Chicago blues underground – rare tracks pulled from a time before labels like Chess and Vee Jay handled most of the big artists, and talents were spread between a handful of much smaller indies! The music here marks that key Chicago transition from rural to urban – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Delta Swing, 1950s. Very Good+
Includes tracks from Howlin Wolf, Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Reed, Tampa Red, Curtis Jones, Grace Brim, JB Hutto, and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Big Jack Johnson

Oil Man
Earwig, 1987. Near Mint-
Jack Johnson plays lots of mean guitar here – in a quartet that features Frank Frost on piano, instead of the guitar you might know from his earliest material! LP, Vinyl record album
Chess, Mid 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Is it Fulsom or Fulson? We're not going to try and present ourselves as the authority, but what we can tell you is this collection features 27 tracks from the man, mostly raw blues, though a number of cuts are more produced, with full horn section and piano complementing Fulsom's guitar and vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blind Boy Fuller

Truckin My Blues Away
Yazoo, Late 30s. Near Mint-
A great little record from Yazoo – almost worth the price alone for the great Robert Crumb cover art – but a real treasure considering the vintage recordings by Blind Boy Fuller underneath! The set brings together Fuller recordings from the years 1936 to 1939 – surprisingly well-r ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mississippi, Late 60s/Early 70s/Early 90s. Near Mint-
A great mix of vintage and later work from Abner Jay – a unique one man band in the best rural blues tradition of the south – and who, like some of the best, doesn't ever use his multi-instrument talent as a gimmick! Instead, Jay works here in a mode that's like a stripped-down combo, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Walter Horton

Fine Cuts
Blind Pig, 1977. Near Mint-
Features Big Walter Horton on vocals and harmonica – with Ron Levy on piano, John Nicholas on guitar, and Mark Kazanoff on sax – on tiles that include "Walter's Swing", "Everybody's Fishin", "Worried Life", "Stop Clownin", "Hobo Blues", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Candid, 1960. Sealed
A really fantastic showcase for the Chicago-raised Otis Spann – a musician who'd already had plenty of recordings under his belt by the time of this session, but definitely gets a different sort of exposure here – thanks to the unique presentation of the Candid Records label! Candid ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, 1968. Good
A great tribute from James Brown to Little Willie John – a huge influence on the vocal style of The Godfather himself! There are some great deep soul tracks on here, and lots of groovy instrumentals – put together to make for one of the most compelling James Brown King albums of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Uniteledis (France), 1975. Sealed 2LP
One of the last truly outside albums recorded by Archie Shepp in the 70s – a French performance that's very similar to the open-ended, freely-blown recordings he did for the BYG/Actuel label a few years before! The record captures Shepp in territory that's different than some of the more ... LP, Vinyl record album
