40 Famous Records

LP (Item 203294) Polygram, Late 1950s/Early 1960s — Condition: Very Good+
3LP
(90s issue. Cover has light wear, corner bump.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mercury, 1950s. Very Good+
(White label promo. Cover has a small split on the top seam, light wear, and a promo stamp.) LP, Vinyl record album

Chantels, Dubs, Little Anthony & The Imperials, & Others

Rock N Roll Jamboree
End, Late 50s. Very Good
That's a really creepy puppet on the cover – but the set's a classic collection of R&B from the mighty End label! Titles include "7-11" by the Gone Allstars with Buddy Lucas on tenor, "Song In My Heart" by The Dubs, "Wait A Minute" by Jo-Ann Campbell, "T ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, Late 60s/Mid 70s. Near Mint- 3LP Trifold
A great set of Stevie's best tracks for Motown! 3 LPs deep, with 40 tracks in all, mostly from the late 60s, with a handful of numbers from the early 70s, including a few goodies that are getting tougher to find on wax. Includes "Hey Love", "Angie Girl", "Yester-Me, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet Inspirations

Estelle, Myrna & Sylvia
Stax, 1973. Very Good
A great back-to-basics set for the Sweet Inspirations – now working here as the trio of Estelle Brown, Myrna Smith, and Sylvia Shamwell – and working with David Porter in a strongly Memphis mode! The arrangements on the set are a bit more ambitious than usual for Stax at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Genius Of Ray Charles
Atlantic, 1959. Good
Later Atlantic Records material from the legendary Ray Charles – a set that definitely lives up to the genius of the title, in that it shows a real sense of development in Ray's music! Charles has moved from the shorter R&B of his early Atlantic singles, to embrace some greater jazz-based ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions & Jerry Butler

Vintage Years
Sire, Mid 60s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nifty 2LP set that brings together a motherlode of the Impressions' best material from their ABC years – plus some of Jerry Butler's nice solo material for Mercury from the same time, and a few Curtis cuts from the early 70s. Too much to mention here, but titles include "Keep On ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Preston

Most Exciting Organ Ever
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good
One of Billy's best, and it's got a hard wailing raw groove that's missing from a lot of his later work! There's a very churchy sound in the organ, with all the stops open and a very large sound coming out of the speaker – and Billy wails in a manner that's similar to some of Jimmy McGriff's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Green

Full Of Fire
Hi Records, 1976. Near Mint-
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Production is by the team of Al and Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's slightly fuller and more updated than before, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Jackson

Music & Me
Motown, 1973. Very Good+
Classic early work by Michael Jackson – a record that has him stepping away from the Jackson 5, and really hitting a personal feel with some of the ballads – quite a surprise, given that his standout later solo work would be more focused on groovers! As with the Jackson 5 albums, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dorothy Moore

Time Out For Me
Volt, 1988. Sealed
Later work from Dorothy – but not a bad album of modern southern soul, done in a style that's somewhat like her work for Malaco. Tracks include "Walk Through This Pain", "Endless Summer Nights", "He May Not Be Mine", "I Still Get Turned On", "Whate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fatback

XII
Spring, 1979. Very Good+
It's the group's 12th album, but they're still going strong – working in a sweet mix of bassy funk that really expands their original sound! The album's got a nice clubby feel overall – not really disco, but bumpin soul that still shows the group as a mostly funk act, but one with an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Von Freeman

Serenade & Blues
Nessa, 1979. Near Mint-
Right from the very first note, you'll know you're in for something special here – the unusual phrasing and open-hearted qualities that made Von Freeman one of the true Chicago legends on the tenor saxophone – even though he never got the global fame of contemporaries like Clifford ...
