Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus

LP (Item 20269) Impulse, 1963 — Condition: Near Mint-

The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than before – with a sense of all the best qualities that Charles was finding in his music, laid out back to back in near-perfect formation! The group's full of great players – with reeds from Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, and Jerome Richardson – all of whom really contribute some deep tones to the album – and Jaki Byard's on piano, making one of his key Mingus appearances of the 60s. Titles include the massive "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" (the virtual Mingus "trademark" tune), plus the tracks "Celia", "Hora Decubitus", and "II B.S.".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Late 80s MCA/Impulse pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the top left corner, with a barcode sticker and small index label in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
The title's an apt one, because after frustrations experienced working for Columbia and other labels, Mingus is finally allowed the freedom here to present his own ideas in all their unfettered glory – working with a bracingly tight quartet that features Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet ... Charles Mingus

Charlie Mingus Live
Affinity (UK), 1960. Near Mint-
An odd release of material from Charles Mingus' 1960 performance at Antibes – slightly different from the Atlantic Records issue of the performance. The album's a great extrapolation of the sound that Mingus had forged on sessions for Columbia, Atlantic, and Candid – the latter label ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

New Tijuana Moods
Bluebird/RCA, 1957/1986. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Oh how we love this one! This killer 2LP set takes one of Mingus' best-ever records, and makes it even better! The original Tijuana Moods album was recorded in 1957 but not released until 1962 – and the record features one of Mingus' strongest groups ever, with Shafi Hadi on alto and ... Chico Hamilton

Dealer
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good- Gatefold
One of Chico's classic recordings for Impulse, and a weird batch of tracks that have an off-beat sound to them that's hard to categorize. The group includes Ernie Hayes on organ, Arnie Lawrence on alto, Larry Coryell on guitar, and a guest appearance by Archie Shepp on piano. Tracks include " ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC/Impulse, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Amazing work from Gato Barbieri's legendary exploration of Latin American sounds for Impulse Records – a set that's heavy on Cuban influences, thanks to arrangements from the mighty Chico O'Farrill! Waterfalls
Impulse, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderful classic from John Klemmer – one of those artists we've under-appreciated for years, but grow to love more and more as time goes by! John Coltrane

Infinity
Impulse, 1965/1972. Very Good Gatefold
The John Coltrane sound stretching out to Infinity – beautifully collaborating core spiritual sounds recorded when The Great One was still alive, and later string passages done by Alice Coltrane in the early 70s! The initial tracks are very open and almost easygoing – not the full-on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1960. Very Good Gatefold
The title's no mistake – both in its pluralization and its acclaim for Kai Winding – as the leader here is working with a brace of additional trombones, all in a groove that's one of his most fluid on record to date! The style builds nicely from the sound that Kai and JJ Johnson forged ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Everybody Loves A Lover
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A simple formula, but one of Shirley's best records from the mid 60s, and a tight batch of quartet tracks that also features Stanley Turrentine on tenor. The title cut's a classic jazz stepper in Chicago, with a subtly loping groove that works pretty darn well. Other tracks include "Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album

Live From Los Angeles
Impulse, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
A unique little outing for Oliver Nelson – one that breaks him out of the familiar territory of the studio, and puts him in a much more spontaneous live setting!
