Songs From Brazil (Collectors Series)

LP (Item 202553) Westminster, 1956 — Condition: Near Mint-
(Collectors Series pressing. Cover has gloss wrinkles in front.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Baden Powell

Fresh Winds
United Artists, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very nice material recorded by Baden Powell in Paris, with backing by Paul Mauriat & His Orchestra. There's a nice organ player in the group, and his solos give the record a cool airy sound, and a nice bottom that's sometimes missing from Baden's other records. Tracks include "Choro Para ... Paramount, 1971. Very Good+
A cool change in the style of guitarist Bola Sete – a shift from the mellower, bossa-inflected styles of his 60s work on Fantasy Records – and a jauntier set of grooves overall! The instrumentation here is still mostly small combo – Bola's acoustic guitar with bass, drums, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fontana (Brazil), Early 70s. Near Mint-
Although this one seems to be a "best of" collection of tracks by Joao Gilberto – it's actually mostly a repackaged version of his stellar Joao Gilberto album for Polydor from the early 70s! If you don't know that one, it's amazing – and it features Joao singing with only ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gal Costa

Minha Voz
Polygram (Brazil), 1982. Very Good+
Great stuff from Gal – even if the record is a lot smoother than her earlier work! The record's got a light jazzy style – like a lot of Gal's other work from the time – but this actually works quite well for her lovely voice, especially on the more intimate numbers. Titles ... Som Livre (Brazil), 1975. Very Good

Paulo Diniz

Paulo Diniz (1973)
Odeon (Brazil), 1973. Very Good+
Sweetly tripping samba work from Paulo Diniz – and a record that has his wonderful vocals set up with all sorts of groovy touches in the arrangements – thanks to maestro Nelsinho! The album's got that great expansion of samba styles that the Odeon label was doing so well in the early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Emilio Santiago

Milton Nascimento

Milagre Dos Peixes
Odeon (Brazil), 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Fantastic stuff! This is one of Milton Nascimento's darkest LPs, with a great set of tracks that have a deep rock feel to them, yet which maintain all of the soulful spirit that was in Nascimento's earlier recordings. The musicians include Nelson Angelo, Toninho, Paulo Moura, Wagner Tiso, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pery Ribeiro

Pery E Todo Bossa
Odeon (Brazil), 1963. Very Good
A rare bossa set by one of Brazil's most famous pop singers! Pery Ribeiro often worked in other, more romantic pop modes – but on this album he's performing bossa work, and doing a pretty darn great job, we might add! The record features some great large arrangements by Lyrio Panicalli, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Mauriat/Erlon Chavez

As 10 Cancoes Medalha De Ouro
Mit/Philips (Brazil), 1972. Very Good+
A cool record that features some excellent work from Erlon Chaves! Chaves and Mauriat split this album in half – so stick to Chaves' side, which features some pretty cool tracks that mix together Brazilian instrumentation with a funky easy listening sound from the early 70s. The standout ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Drum Suite
Columbia, 1956/1957. Good
An incredible early experimental album from Art Blakey – one of the first to feature him in expanded percussion format! Side one of the album features the extended "Drum Suite" – a set of 3 tracks ("The Sacrifice", "Cubano Chant", and "Oscalypso") ... LP, Vinyl record album
