Offering (Japanese paper sleeve edition)

CD (Item 200285) Venus (Japan), 1992 — Condition: Used
$24.99 ...

CD

Beautifully mellow work from the great Marion Brown – playing here in a laidback quintet setting that brings out some of his most soulful tones. The group includes piano, guitar, bass, and drums – but the main focus is on the alto of Brown, which has a warm world-weary tone that's very different than that of his earlier avant work – but really wonderful overall! Other players include Tom McClung on piano, Jay Messer on guitar, Mike Marcus on bass, and Chris Dailey on drums – and titles include "After The Rain", "Ode To Coltrane", "Sky Entrance", "Terra", and "Berkshire Blues".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, includes obi.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

A warm and wonderful set from French tenor genius Barney Wilen – perhaps one of his best of the past 20 years! The record features a stripped-down organ trio, which brings out some of the best tone we've heard from Wilen's horn in a long time. In a way, the record is vaguely similar to Stan ... CD

Eddie Higgins & Scott Hamilton

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Venus (Japan), 2001. Used
Scott Hamilton blows some wonderfully smokey tenor here – sounding great in the company of Eddie Higgins' trio! The date's got a really old school tenor sort of sound – echoes of Ben Webster and Lester Young, but updated too – taken to the clear, mature territory of Higgins' ... CD

Beautiful blowing from the great Barney Wilen – an album that's as relaxed as you might guess from the image on the cover, but which has a rock-solid sound all the way through! At this point in his career, Barney's definitely back on top of his game – playing both tenor and soprano sax ... CD

An album that's maybe not as modern as some of Paul Bley's other records – but one that's still got a compelling quality throughout! The session supposedly takes inspiration from Gregorian chants (somewhat big on the recording scene at the time of the 1994 date) – but the music is all ... CD
