Phillips' Head (with bonus tracks)

CD (Item 199502) Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975 — Condition: Used
$14.99 ...

CD

Originally: 19.99
Tenorist Flip Phillips was one of the leading lights of the early days of Verve Records – a key player in the JATP, and an artist who also got to record a fair bit as a leader, too – and although other record companies didn't record Flip as often in the 60s and 70s, it's clear from a set like this that he really continued to stay at the top of his game! Some of Phillips' other albums maybe are in a straighter, swing based mode – but this set is more open and creative, and not only has Flip on tenor, but a bit of bass clarinet too – the latter of which he blows with a hell of a lot of care and charm. The rest of the group features Mickey Crane on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Mousey Alexander on drums – and titles include "Fat Tessie's Ass", "Nature Boy", "Love Story", "Jeannie", "Nancy", and "This Is All I Ask". CD features three bonus alternate takes, too!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Used CD Grade

We use the all-encompassing grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or packaging details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, case/insert damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marc Levin

Social Sketches
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. Used
Marc Levin is maybe best known for one famous album of avant jazz recorded for the Savoy label in the 60s – but he's equally stunning here in a mid 70s set that got little circulation at the time, but which is a key part of Levin's under-recorded legacy as a leader! The approach is very open ... CD
