Greatest Of Dizzy Gillespie

LP (Item 1989) RCA, Late 40s/1961 — Condition: Very Good+

Great RCA comp of Dizzy's earlier bop sides for the label, many of which came out first only as singles. Tracks include all the classics like "Cubana Be", "Cubana Bop", "Manteca", "Night in Tunisia", and a whole bunch more that you've heard him reprise a million times on later albums, but which are laid out here in their (mostly) original recordings. Great bop classics, and a nice cover of Dizzy with his head in his hands.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1960. Very Good+
One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Very Good
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Concierto En Jazz
RCA, 1962. Very Good
A live set from this obscure Mexican jazz combo – recorded in the early 60s, in a mode that's kind of a small combo take on an Ellington sound, but with some freer twists too! The approach is nicely offbeat – starting out familiar at first, but then opening up with some offbeat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Samba De Orfeu
RCA, 1960s. Very Good+
A nice little reissue of some of Paul Desmond's great RCA sides. Put together in the mid 70s, but collecting recordings from a decade earlier, this nice little LP includes many of the nice numbers Desmond recorded in his cool quartet with Jim Hall, plus a few of the nice string laden numbers from ... Erroll Garner at the start of the 60s – but still sounding wonderfully unique, and coming across with a timeless vibe that makes the record every bit as great as his classics from the 50s!
