Early Tapes – July/Aug 1980 (with bonus tracks)

CD (Item 197368) Polydor/Universal (UK), 1980 — Condition: Used
$11.99 ...

CD

Originally: 14.99
Early work from British soul legends Level 42 – cut way back in their early days, before the band had a formal release, back when they were sounding a lot rougher and jazzier. The sound here definitely has the crossover appeal of their hits, but there's also a more soulful approach overall – and some strong keyboard work from Wally Badarou, who plays on most of the set, and co-wrote a good portion of the songs. Titles include "Sandstorm", "Theme To Margaret", "Love Meeting Love", "Mr Pink", "Woman", and "88". Reissue includes an alternate mix of "Wings Of Love" plus four live tracks.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2007 pressing with 5 bonus tracks.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

El DeBarge

El DeBarge
Gordy/Universal (Japan), 1986. Used
The debut solo album from El DeBarge – issued after a strong run of group records with the other members of his family, and a set that really let him take the lead with his warmly flowing vocal style! El's still a bit young at this point, but carries himself off like a real professional ... CD
Keen/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used
An early gem from the great Sam Cooke – a pre-RCA session, but one that already has Sam showing a stronger jazzy side of his talents – as you might guess from the title! The Lady, in this case, is the late Billie Holiday – recently passed at the time of this recording, and ... CD
Motown/Universal (Japan), 1973. Used
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... CD

Polydor/Universal, 1968. Used 2 CDs
James Brown's great second album recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem – a set we like even better than the first famous volume – because it's much more stretched-out, harder-hitting, and full of fire! You'd be hard pressed to find a better example of Brown's showmanship on ... CD

Alma Faye

Doin' It
Casablanca/Universal (Japan), 1979. Used
Sweet Canadian club from Alma Faye – a record that shows that the scene up north was just as great for disco as the one down in New York! The record's got these flowing arrangements from Lee Gagnon – an artist who was working in jazz a few years before, but manages to find just the ... CD
Polydor, 1976. Used
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused ... CD

Parliament

Trombipulation
Casablanca/Universal (Japan), 1980. Used
Often overlooked, but a very tasty album of late grooves from Parliament – not as much of a major hit as their previous records, but maybe even better because of that! The album's got the group's sound merging a bit with the Funkadelic vibe – that post-psych style of the George Clinton ... CD

James Brown

Hell
Polydor, 1974. Used
A killer double-length album from James Brown – a smoking set that stands strongly right next to similar packages like Get On The Good Foot and Payback! The album's a bit different than the latter, in that the tracks are mostly shorter, and there's some mellower cuts too – but they ... CD

Irresistible
Island, 1989. Used
An irresistible classic from Miles Jaye – possibly his best-known album, bouncing along with plenty of beats at the end of the 80s! The rhythms are plenty programmed, but Miles' vocals provide a great warm sense of contrast – soaring out with fluid, mature tones that are mighty nice, ... CD
