Early Tapes – July/Aug 1980 (with bonus tracks)

CD (Item 197368) Polydor/Universal (UK), 1980 — Condition: Used
$14.99 ...

CD

Early work from British soul legends Level 42 – cut way back in their early days, before the band had a formal release, back when they were sounding a lot rougher and jazzier. The sound here definitely has the crossover appeal of their hits, but there's also a more soulful approach overall – and some strong keyboard work from Wally Badarou, who plays on most of the set, and co-wrote a good portion of the songs. Titles include "Sandstorm", "Theme To Margaret", "Love Meeting Love", "Mr Pink", "Woman", and "88". Reissue includes an alternate mix of "Wings Of Love" plus four live tracks.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2007 pressing with 5 bonus tracks.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

James Brown

Hell
Polydor, 1974. Used
A killer double-length album from James Brown – a smoking set that stands strongly right next to similar packages like Get On The Good Foot and Payback! The album's a bit different than the latter, in that the tracks are mostly shorter, and there's some mellower cuts too – but they ... CD

Polydor/Universal, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. Used
A set put together as the soundtrack for the James Brown bio-pic – but one that features mostly original recordings by The Godfather himself, and a few older cuts altered a bit for the film! The groove runs from early 60s soul to early 70s funk – and there's a fair bit of live tracks, ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1976. Used
An enduring classic from James Brown – quite possibly the strongest of his late 70s albums, and a record that nicely balances the harder funk of the early part of the decade with a more sophisticated style that almost gets slightly jazzy at times! The vocals are planted strongly at the top ... CD
RCA/Universal (Japan), 1964. Used
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that ... CD

Cameo

Feel Me
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. Used
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the ... CD
Rush/Universal (Japan), 1995. Used
A huge 90s album from Montell Jordan – one that formed a big bridge between the worlds of hip hop and R&B, and which has had some surprisingly strong legs in the years after it was first crafted! Plenty of folks blended hip hop elements with soul, but Montell may well have been one of ... CD

Richie Havens

Mixed Bag
Polydor, 1967. Used
The genius of Richie Havens at this point is beyond compare – a unique take on the dying folk sound of the 60s, one that infused it with a deeper sense of soul that helped it get new legs in the Woodstock generation – yet which is also heard here before any of the post-hippie cliches ... CD
Polydor, 1960s. Used 2 CDs
