Where I'm Meant To Be

LP (Item 194919) Partisan, 2022 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
Ezra Collective are a group who've been burning up the British scene so much in recent years, they've barely had time to give us a full length album – a situation that's more than corrected by this well-done set! The combo are often tied to some of the best jazz experiments in London of the past decade or so, but in the true fashion of that city's culture, they manage to weave together other strands of music besides jazz – plenty of post-colonial touches from Afro Funk, dub, and even hip hop – while also standing strong with the strength of jazz-based playing to set them apart from so many other groups who just jumble together influences and spill them out in the studio. There's a rock-solid quality to the overall presentation here – a really unified records that moves through tracks that include "Victory Dance", "Live Strong", "Ego Killah", "Togetherness", "No Confusion", "Never The Same Again", "Love In Outer Space", "Belonging", and "Welcome To My World" – plus a few words from Steve McQueen!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Good Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop ... Brian Auger

Straight Ahead
RCA, 1974. Very Good+
Long lean groovers from Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express group – recorded with a slightly freer feel than some of the group's earlier albums, and an approach that has them stretching out nicely! Brian still sings a bit on some tracks, but there seems to be more of a focus than before on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Black Byrd
Blue Note, 1973. Very Good
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went on to forever change the face of jazz funk! After rumbling around for a few years attempting electric styles that really didn't fit his mode, Donald wisely hooked up with Larry, and hit a groove here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Ndeda
Mercury, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Despite the fact that this album's got an African-sounding name, and features a painting of Quincy in tribal garb, the album's actually a compilation of his 60's stuff for Mercury – which was not very Afro-funky, but which is still pretty darn groovy! The record's got his stunning cut "S ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Desmond

Skylark
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A stunning 70s set from the great Paul Desmond – one that has the tremendous alto player finding an even fresher groove than before – yet all without losing any of the class and control that made him so great in the 50s and 60s! Don Sebesky arranged the set, but most of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
The legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel – with results that are simply amazing, and very different than the originals! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1953. Very Good+
A great set that brings together early material that trombone giant JJ Johnson cut for Blue Note as a leader – sides that already mark his approach to the instrument as one of the most distinct of the time, and which pave the way for all the greatness that Johnson would bring to jazz in years ... Epic, Early 60s. Very Good+
Hefti was one of the grooviest of the bigger band arrangers during the 50s – and thanks to Basie, and a few well-placed soundtracks, he had the chance to really experiment with some unusual combinations of material that proved to leave him with an incredible legacy. This album is a perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Push Push
Embryo, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums – and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter – although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day – but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time – tight, focused, and a perfect ... John Blair

Mystical Soul
A&R, 1971. Very Good
Wild stuff! John Blair was a soul singer and violinist with a weird approach that mixed soul, pop, and a little bit of rock into a sweet electric vibe with that kind of unique sound that people used to overlook because they never knew where to slot it – but which is getting a lot more ... Mainstream, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A wonderful soundtrack from the great Quincy Jones – one that's maybe not as well-known as his albums for Mercury at the time, but which is maybe even groovier! There's loads of great elements going on in the music – a bit of whistling from Toots Thielemans at times, some wordless ... LP, Vinyl record album
