Pieces Of A Dream

LP (Item 1940) Elektra, 1981 — Condition: Very Good+
The debut of a genius group that would forever transform the sound of electric jazz in the 80s – and a brilliant set that few others could match at the time! Pieces Of A Dream first snuck onto the scene with a sound that was refreshingly subtle at the time – almost a back-to-basics approach to electric jazz, and one that got past some of the excesses and more dancefloor-oriented styles that hit a lot of fusion at the end of the 70s. The approach here is often quite light – still soulful and rhythmic, but mostly with a gentle focus on the group's keyboards by James Lloyd, which really set the scene wonderfully for the flowing mellow soul style of the record. The jazz component of the work is still relatively strong, too – even on the tunes that feature vocals by singer Barbara Walker – a great fit for the group's sound on the cuts "Warm Weather" and "Lovers". Other titles include "Body Magic", "Touch Me In the Spring", "Steady Glide", and the classic "Pieces Of A Dream".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Grover Washington Jr

Best Is Yet To Come
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+
A set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ernie Watts

Look In Your Heart
Elektra (Japan), 1980. Near Mint-
A sweet little record that draws plenty from a double-headed power team – Ernie Watts on reeds, and the mighty Wayne Henderson on production! The album may well be one of the best that Watts ever cut – a set that's not nearly as polished or commercial as his later 80s efforts – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Elektra, 1981. Very Good+ Gatefold
A smooth set from reedman John Klemmer, but a pretty darn soulful one too – and a great illustration of the way that Klemmer could still hold onto his roots a lot more strongly than some of his contemporaries! The backings are gentle and fusiony – often with some great keyboard work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clifford Brown & Max Roach

Pure Genius Vol 1
Elektra, 1956/1982. Near Mint-
Absolutely burning live recording of Brownie's group co led with Max Roach, and also featuring Sony Rollins. This set features some the group's best playing, limited only by the mediocre sound quality of the recording. Great extended takes on "I'll Remember April", 'What's New", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

One Night In Washington
Elektra, 1955. Near Mint-
A rare 50s performance – featuring a smoking version of "The Afro Suite" – plus some more boppish numbers too! LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon

American Classic
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+
An unusual later set from the great Dexter Gordon – and a record that features the surprising addition of Hammond organ! Shirley Scott's on the record with Dex, and plays organ on half the cuts (Kirk Lightsey handles piano on the others) – bringing a soulful depth to the record which ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Clarke & Chick Corea

Griffith Park Collection
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint-
A seminal set in the rebirth of straight jazz in the early 80s – a wonderful record with a much warmer, more traditional feel than you'd expect from some of the players involved! Bassist Stanley Clarke and pianist Chick Corea really return to their roots here – Stanley with some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Elektra, 1979. Near Mint-

Bobbi Humphrey

Freestyle
Epic, 1978. Very Good
Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Bobbi also sings a bit on the set, but in a way that's pretty darn great – wonderfully sweet at times, with a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1968. Near Mint-
Nice mixture of boppish and swing-based material, and an excellent soulful session that has Illinois Jacquet playing in a stripped-down setting with Ben Tucker on bass, Alan Dawson on drums, and Barry Harris on piano, who adds a nice warm dimension to the set. Jacquet's tone is fantastic as always ... LP, Vinyl record album

Andre Hodeir

Jazz Et Jazz
Philips, 1958. Near Mint-
Brilliant work from the modernist underground late 50s Paris! Andre Hodeir was one of the city's best-known jazz composers and arrangers at the time – a key part of the postwar scene, and its development into its own style away from strictly American sounds. Hodier's working here with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Summers

Straight To The Bank
Prestige, 1978. Very Good
Probably Bill Summers' best LP for Prestige, and certainly the one in which he got his groove straightened out, and more in the pocket than on some of his other ones. The title cut's a massive groover, and the LP version ends in a cool acappella sweep on the chorus that sounds (in our opinion) ... LP, Vinyl record album
