His Greatest Recordings

LP (Item 19324) Atco, Late 50s/1971 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Before he died an early, untimely death, Chuck Willis cut some fantastic R&B sides for Atlantic in the late 50s. This nice set brings together most of the best material from that time, inlcuding hits like "C. C. Rider" and "Hang Up My Rock & Roll Shoes" – plus lesser-known material (which we like better), like "My Crying Eyes", "Thunder & Lightning", "From the Bottom Of My Heart", and "That Train Is Gone". Also includes the stellar "What Am I Living For", which we could hear a hundred times in a row!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

King Curtis

Sweet Soul
Atco, 1968. Very Good
A sweet take on the sound of soul in the 60s – as King Curtis turns his well-honed saxophone sound towards a number of pop and soul tunes of the time! The format here is slightly mellow – of the sort that would be a perfect instrumental backing for Aretha Franklin and some of the other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coasters

One By One
Atco, 1960. Very Good
Nice work by The Coasters – even if the album isn't one of their craziest! The set has them moving away from original tracks by the Lieber-Stoller team, and taking on standards like "Satin Doll", "Autumn Leaves", "Easy Living", "Moonglow", "Willow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dr John

Gris Gris
Atco, 1968. Near Mint-
The great Dr John at his freaky deaky best – working here in a mindblowing mix of New Orleans roots and late 60s psych – all served up in some heady studio space and instrumental touches! King Curtis

Everybody's Talkin'
Atco, 1972. Very Good+
King Curtis' last album of studio work for Atlantic – pulled from a number of sessions recorded in the year before his untimely early death! Atco, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
A classic full length set from The Coasters – and as much of a full album that brings together their best for Atlantic, as it is a collection of earlier material from singles! Dr John

Dr John's Gumbo
Atco, 1972. Near Mint-
A rootsy classic from Dr John – an early 70s set in which he turns his talents to a bunch of older New Orleans soul and blues tracks, but serves them up in a style that still has plenty of his mystic gumbo in place! After the freer-wheeling longform sprawls of his more psychedelic albums, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sure, they were hitmakers – but we love these guys, and find them to be one of the most radical vocal groups of all time! Capitols

We Got A Thing
Atco, 1966. Very Good
An obvious follow-up to their big hit "Cool Jerk", but a great album of raw soulful tracks that puts this Detroit group right up there with the best of the 60s up-tempo harmony groups! Apart from the nice original title cut, the record's also got a number of other great tracks like " ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, 1975. Near Mint-
It must have cost Barrabas plenty to make the heart-shaped manhole on the cover of this album – but given the sound of the grooves, the money was well worth it! Curtis Mayfield

Curtis
Curtom, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A mindblowing solo set from Curtis Mayfield – a record that not only foregrounds all the subtle politics he'd been forging in the Impressions during the 60s – but one that also really has Mayfield exploding as a force to be reckoned with in the studio!
