Takin' Care Of Business

LP (Item 1917) TCB, Early 60s/Early 70s — Condition: Very Good-
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

70's issue of one of the Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams sessions for the Warwick label, from the early 60's. The groove is nice and hard, with a very tight, very in-the-pocket sort of sound. A young Herbie Hancock plays piano, and he lays down solos that are a lot more daring, and with a lot more fire, than anything he did on his early Blue Note recordings. With the cuts "Out Of This World", "Day Dreams", "Bird House", and a stellar cover of "Mr. Lucky".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red label pressing.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Donald Byrd

House Of Byrd
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Two nice Prestige blowing sessions from the 50s – featuring Donald Byrd right up front. The first LP of the set was issued as Two Trumpets with Art Farmer joining Byrd, set in a sextet with Jackie McLean, Doug Watkins, Barry Harris, and Art Taylor. The harder sound of Byrd is a nice mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Royal Flush
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
One of the seminal sides cut by Donald Byrd in his partnership with Pepper Adams – a high-up, low-down set that's a smoker all the way through! Byrd's brightness on trumpet is nicely matched by Adams' fluid work on baritone sax – and the pair are wonderfully supported by a rhythm trio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd's Best
Blue Note, Early 70s/1975. Very Good+
A tasty collection of goodies that Donald recorded with the great Larry Mizell during the early 70s. Certainly not his all-inclusive best, but some of our favorite material by this legendary soul jazz trumpeter. The tracks have a sparkling electric jazz funk sound, with amazing production that ... Donald Byrd

Black Byrd
Blue Note, 1973. Very Good
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went on to forever change the face of jazz funk! Donald Byrd

Fancy Free
Blue Note, 1969. Sealed
One of the coolest, grooviest 60s albums from trumpeter Donald Byrd – one that has him really reaching out for a hip new sound, but in ways that are different than most of his other material at the time! Key on the date is the placement of electric piano from Duke Pearson – played in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Up With Donald Byrd
Verve, 1964. Very Good
A great album, and unlike anything else Donald Byrd ever recorded – almost mad hodgepodge of the styles Byrd used at Blue Note, as the session brings together funky soul jazz with vocal backings – linking the groove of At The Races with the choral stylings of A New Perspective! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

One
20th Century, 1978. Near Mint-
A great little set from Ahmad – laidback, mellow, with a slowly spiralling groove that's slyly funky at times. Ahmad's playing acoustic piano and clavinet on the record – and arrangements are by Bones Howe, Richard Evans, Ahmad, and Mike Melvoin. A few tracks feature a larger group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dewey Redman Quartet

Living On The Edge
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Very Good+
The album's got a bit of an odd title – as we hardly think that Redman was living on the edge at the time – but it's also a great little set, no matter what the name! Dewey's playing in a soulful and inside mode on most tracks – working in a style that recalls some of Archie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brecker Brothers

Don't Stop The Music
Arista, 1977. Sealed
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's ...
