Nightingale

LP (Item 19057) Elektra, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-

A very nice album cut by Gilberto Gil in the US in the late 70s – one that features production by Sergio Mendes, and sound that's a strong mix of jazz, soul, and Brazilian grooves! The record kind of fits in with the Elektra modern soul work at the time – a smooth blend of jazz and soul, with distinct Latin touches – and has backing by American and Brazilian jazz players that include Lee Ritenour, Don Grusin, Roberto Da Silva, Alex Acuna, and Oscar Castro Neves. The record's one of Gilberto's nicest from the era, and includes lots of lovely cuts, like a remake of "Maracatu Atomico", plus "Alapala", "Here & Now", "Balafon", "Nightingale", and "Samba De Los Angeles".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Elektra, 1977. Very Good+
One of the funkiest albums Sergio Mendes ever recorded – a monster of a record that's filled with enough dancefloor groovers to have had a big impact on the soul market in the US! There's still elements of the older Mendes modes – especially in the way the vocals float nicely through ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dot, Late 60s. Very Good
A groovy blend of bossa themes and some of the lighter pop treatments that Bonfa often received – not really a problem for us, as the approach always filled out his sound a bit more, and made for some catchy tunes with a very groovy style! Tracks include "Bahia Soul", "Dois ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic stuff! This is one of Milton Nascimento's darkest LPs, with a great set of tracks that have a deep rock feel to them, yet which maintain all of the soulful spirit that was in Nascimento's earlier recordings. RCA, 1970. Very Good
A wickedly wonderful record from Luiz Bonfa – one that has his bossa-inflected guitar style supported by larger arrangements by Marty Manning. That's Brasil 65, not Brasil 66 – a distinction that marks a key early stage for the great Sergio Mendes – heard here on one of his first albums to mix together bossa jazz and vocals!
