Mann & A Woman

LP (Item 18827) Atlantic, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
A really unique collaboration between fluteman Herbie Mann and soul singer Tamiko Jones – a vocalist who's always a really special talent, and who has an equally great ear for jazz as well! That style works perfectly here – as the vibe is somewhere between Herbie's Latin and Brazilian-styled sets for Atlantic, and some of the groovier jazz of the 60s – particularly the styles influenced by hip soundtracks of the time. Arrangements are very fresh, and even make familiar tunes pop nicely – thanks to work on the charts from Joe Zawinul, Melba Liston, and Jimmy Wisner. But the really special talent here is Tamiko – who sometimes sings lyrics, sometimes works wordlessly in a really cool mode – on titles that include "A Man & A Woman", "O Barquinho", "It's Time That You Settled Down", "Sidewinder", "Day Tripper", "Sunny", and "How Insensitive".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono red & purple label pressing. Cover has light wear, a cutout hole, and two spots of sticker residue.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus – a record that fits nicely in his legacy of other recordings for Atlantic, but which has a very different approach! On this set, Mingus plays piano, and even sings a bit – using this messed-up take on blues roots, but filtered through a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette!
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
A stunning session by Ornette, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! His quartet here features the amazing Scott LaFaro on bass, and a young Ed Blackwell on drums – both of whom give the tracks an amazing pulse that brings new energy out of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer

Interaction
Atlantic, 1963. Very Good
A magnificent set from the team of Art Farmer and Jim Hall – one of those rare pairings in jazz that somehow comes off sounding even way better than the sum of its parts – and that's saying a lot, given that the parts here are already pretty darn great! Farmer's flugelhorn and Hall's ... LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet early 60s set by Herbie Mann! The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! Modern Jazz Quartet

Legendary Profile
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
A cool 70s album from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one that has John Lewis playing a bit of electric piano, in addition to his usual acoustic keys! At some level, it almost feels like the group's working off the lessons learned during their Apple Records years – and are also picking ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Sky Dive
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
A killer set from Freddie Hubbard's legendary years on CTI! Like the classic Red Clay album, there's 4 tunes here, all longer cuts – where everyone gets a chance to stretch out a bit, over smooth (but not too smooth!) electric grooves, supported by great orchestrations from Don Sebesky! Blue Spirits
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
Quite an unusual session for trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – a set done during his early run of albums for Blue Note, but one that's got some much darker, more modern qualities than the rest!
