TJ Fowler & His Band – Early Detroit R&B

LP (Item 187870) Official (Denmark), Late 1940s/Early 1950s — Condition: Near Mint-
Great postwar work from Detroit – tracks that nicely mix jump blues with some classier, jazzier instrumentation – featuring work from John Lawton on trumpet, Lee Gross on alto, and Walter Cox on tenor – on titles originally issued by the Savoy, States, National, and Sensation labels!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Do You Have The Time
20th Century, 1972. Very Good
Once a raw harmony group, the Younghearts moved into a sweeter, smoother soul vein for their 20th Century recordings, and the result is an excellent batch of modern soul tracks with a nice groove to them. Al Wilson

Show & Tell
Rocky Road, 1973. Very Good
A crowning moment of genius from Al Wilson – a Cali soul singer who'd already gotten a nice start in the 60s, but who really found his fame with the title track on this 70s gem! Aretha Franklin

Young, Gifted, & Black
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good
A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! ... Bar-Kays

Soul Finger
Volt, 1965. Very Good
One of the best instrumental records to come out of Memphis, and a real kicker by the funky band that went down with Otis Redding in the tragic plane crash in 1968. The leadoff track is the group's amazing hit "Soul Finger", a stormin' instrumental with a wailing brassy sound that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Stewart Remembered
Chess, 1960s/Early 70s. Very Good

Pipe Dreams – Original Soundtrack
Buddah, 1976. Very Good
After hitting big as a singer on the soundtrack for Claudine, Gladys Knight finally got her chance in front of the camera for Pipe Dreams – a record that featured her both as the star on film and on the soundtrack! Osibisa

Heads
MCA, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A really wonderful third album from Osibisa – and a record that really crystallizes the group's sound into a trademark blend of African roots and more progressive-styled jamming!
