Quiet Village

LP (Item 1877) Liberty, 1959 — Condition: Very Good+
An undisputed classic in the exotica genre – and the record that yielded Martin Denny his biggest hit! The title track "Quiet Village" was originally written by Les Baxter, but it was Martin Denny's approach that really managed to send the tune over the top – using spare percussion, rhythmic piano, and just the right amount of vibes and bird calls to give the track a really haunting feel. That approach is echoed throughout the set – with shifting instrumentation that includes celeste, bongos, marimbas, and marimbula as well! Titles include "Quiet Village", "Paradise Found", "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Taste Of Honey
Liberty, 1962. Very Good
A great later moment from Martin Denny – a set that gave him a big 60s hit in a sweet version of "Taste of Honey"! Exotica Vol 3
Liberty, 1959. Near Mint-
Sublime late 50s work from Martin Denny – his third album under the Exotica banner, and almost a deeper and weirder album than the other two! Capitol, 1954. Very Good+
A real classic from Jackie Gleason – and a record that's probably the most outward statement of his big reputation as a booze hound! Mystic Moods Orchestra

Highway One
Warner, 1972. Very Good
A sublime easy classic by The Mystic Moods – who by this time had transformed from a simple "sound effects plus easy listening" group into a sexy electric LA combo. This is one of their first albums for Warner, recorded with a nice sly slightly-funky sound – and it's a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Command, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A pretty great album of groovy tracks from Toots! This one's less in a straight jazz mode than it is in kind of a jazzy easy style – similar to some of Gabor Szabo's work on Impulse from the same time, with a breezy blend of orchestrations, light instrumental solos on flute, vibes, and ... Johnny Williams

Rhythm In Motion
Columbia, 1961. Very Good+
An early 60s Columbia classic from Johnny Williams – a rare album of stereo-heavy instrumentals done in a style that's quite similar to the RCA Stereo Action series of the time – with lots of unusual instrumentation, and a wide-ranging sound that leaps back and forth from speaker to ...
