His Piano & Rhythm

LP (Item 18677) Ansonia, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good-
Great stuff – and one of the purest examples we can find of the Latin piano style of the great Noro Morales! Noro plays here without any of the trappings of some of his other records – just working with a small rhythm combo on an all-instrumental set – with tremendous solo work on the piano – filled with flourishes, but never in a way that's too overly-complicated, nor too dramatic to ever lose its swing! That balance is what made Noro so great back in the day – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Oye Men", "Pica Mosquito", "Mi Guajira", "Vitamina", "Que Linda Eres", and "Oye Negra".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Design, Late 50s. Very Good
Classic stuff by Noro – and a wonderful selection of hard to find material from the 50s! This isn't really a greatest hits album – but it is a good sampling of some of his better (and better-recorded) work during the postwar years, and almost all of the tracks have a nice hard groove ... Delicate & Jumpy
Fania/Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A stunner of a record from the Fania All Stars – a tremendous attempt to move into a 70s soul vein, complete with Satin Soul arrangements from Gene and Billy Page! A really pivotal album in the career of Mongo Santamaria – one that has Mongo stripping down the groove, kicking up some jazz, and mixing together soulful styles that brought him to the top of the Latin crowd of the 1960s! Ray Barretto

La Cuna
CTI, 1981. Near Mint-
A nice jammer from the "second wind" period of CTI – and a strong return to Latin jazz for Ray! Sweet sounds from the Peruvian scene of the 60s and 70s – music that starts in more familiar Latin modes, then quickly expands to a range of other hip South American sounds!
