Ruben Blades — Metiendo Mano ... CD 12.99

Willie Colon declares Ruben Blades as the champ on the cover of this early solo set – and for good reason too, as the album's one of Blades' best! There's a clear, clean simplicity to the record that's totally wonderful – a purity of vision before some of Ruben's later crossover efforts – and a standout sense of voice that's a bit different than the work he'd recorded with Willie Colon as a leader. Of course, given the image on the front, Willie's never too far off – arranging some tracks, producing the record, and playing trombone as well – yet somehow, there's a slight divergence here from the usual Colon groove – and an initial expression of Ruben Blades' grander Latin vision. In addition to Colon, arrangements are also by Louie Ramirez and Louie Cruz – and the band's as tight as can be, and features Yomo Toro on cuatro, Sonny Bravo on piano, and Jose Mangual and Milton Cardona on percussion. Titles include "La Maleta", "Fue Varon", "Pueblo", "Me Recordaras", and "Lluvia De Tu Cielo".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mexican pressing, with silver labels. Cover has some wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Salsamania
Fania, 1976. Very Good
Despite the salsa in the title, this one actually borrows a lot from more traditional sounds – and includes tipica style violin (by Eddie Drennon) and flute, next to lead vocals by Alberto Gonzales and Marco Motroni. Includes a few nice groovers, though – like the breezy "Mia ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great album of salsa tracks recorded at the end of the 70s – when Ray was returning to the scene after a prolonged hand injury kept him out of music for a while. Killer stuff all around! This album's a monster – one of Ray's greatest, with the same sort of Latin Soul groove heard famously on his classic LP Acid. Killer new charanga work from Tipica 73 – a record issued a bit later on their run for Fania, but filled with wonderful tunes that get at all the traditional energy of the group!
