First Seven Days

LP (Item 18570) Nemperor/Atlantic, 1975 — Condition: Sealed

A surprisingly great early album from Jan Hammer – the keyboardist who went onto do some pretty drecky albums in later years, but who still has a surprising amount of sensitivity at this point! The session's a bit of a concept outing – recorded by Hammer after work in Mahavishnu Orchestra, but done in a personal, almost intimate style that's quite different than the overblown affair you might expect. Many tunes simply feature solo piano contemplating the themes, plus additional keyboards and synthesizer as the album moves on – and a bit of additional percussion and violin. There's a lyrical beauty here we never expected in Hammer's work – and titles include "Oceans & Continents", "Fourth Day", "Darnkess/Earth In Search Of A Sun", and "The Animals".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original pressing! Cover has a small cutout hole.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jan Hammer

Oh, Yeah?
Nemperor, 1976. Near Mint-
A jamming little set from Jan Hammer – but one that's still a lot better than most of his other work! The rock influence is strongly felt in most of the tracks on this one, but the overall style is still lean and clean – without as many of the kitschy keyboard lines that later marred ... John Coltrane

Coltrane's Sound
Atlantic, 1960/1966. Near Mint-
One of the more obscure John Coltrane albums for Atlantic – but a beautiful batch of spiritual numbers that really show him pushing towards the sound of A Love Supreme! The date on the album's 1966, but the material was recorded earlier – in that key turning point year of 1960, when ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philly Joe Jones

Philly Joe's Beat
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A stunner! Philly Joe's Beat is a beautiful bit of modernist hardbop by the drummer. Philly Joe pounds away with his usual clarity and groove, but the real treat is an unexpected appearance by the great Bill Barron, who plays tenor on the session. Barron's tenor is amazingly precise, and filled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Ross & Allan Ganley

Jazz Makers
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint-
A rare American release from British baritonist Ronnie Ross – working here in the sharp-edged company of drummer Allan Ganley! Slide Hampton

Jazz With A Twist
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
A firey stormer from the great Slide Hampton! The album's one of his few early sides for Atlantic – and like the others, it's a groundbreaking batch of larger group material, with slide out front on trombone, and the rest of the ensemble vamping along like a tight Blue Note combo. Elvin Jones

And Then Again
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+
A sweet early date as a leader from Elvin Jones – one that has him working strongly away from a John Coltrane setting, with some hip arrangements by Melba Liston! Blue Note, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still ... LP, Vinyl record album
