Amor (Japanese paper sleeve edition)

CD (Item 184327) Venus (Japan), 2005 — Condition: Used
Gatefold
$24.99 ...

CD

Plenty of Amor here, as Eddie Higgins plays in these warm, mellow tones we really love! The album's a laidback date that really opens up with some great lyrical moments – that mix of darkness and light that Eddie brought to his later work – quite different at times than the tones we first heard from him decades back, shaped into maturity here alongside the bass of Sean Smith and drums of Joe Ascione. Many tunes are Latin-inflected standards, and titles include "Perfida", "Amor", "Pensativa", "Begin The Beguine", "Tristeza De Amor", and "Morning".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2010 pressing – includes obi!)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Dear Old Stockholm
Venus (Japan), 2002. Used

Venus (Japan), 1992. Used
Beautifully mellow work from the great Marion Brown – playing here in a laidback quintet setting that brings out some of his most soulful tones. The group includes piano, guitar, bass, and drums – but the main focus is on the alto of Brown, which has a warm world-weary tone that's very ... CD

Sunday In New York
Venus (Japan), 2005. Used
Pure brilliance from tenor giant Eric Alexander – one of the few modern players we'd put on a par with our favorites from older years! Alexander's got a depth of tone and sense of poise that's simply wonderful on the set – one that's never staid, but which continues to grow beautifully ... CD

Scott Hamilton and Eddie Higgins are a pretty great pair together – as you'll hear on this recent date for Japan's Venus Records! Hamilton's got a lot of tradition in his horn, and Higgins a fair bit in his piano too – although Eddie's way of shaping a tune is also very much his own ... CD

Eric Alexander

Gentle Ballads
Venus (Japan), 2004. Used
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the ... CD

Gentle Ballads 2
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used
The ballads are gentle, but the music is great – played in a strongly classic style on the tenor by the great Eric Alexander, all at a level that's much higher than you'd guess from the cheesy nudie image on the cover! The album's a great follow up to Alexander's first session on this vein ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used Gatefold
There's a bit of reverie here, but it's usually the swinging kind instead of the sleepy variety – thanks to a well-formed groove from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! The tunes certainly include a few ballads, but Richie usually takes them with a freely ... CD
