First Minute Of A New Day

LP (Item 1832) Arista, 1975 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that really lets him open up as a singer even more than before! There's plenty of warm electric piano on the album, couched in those wonderfully soulful phrases that Gil and Brian Jackson could cook up so effortlessly at the time – and tracks include the fantastic cut "Winter In America", plus "The Liberation Song", "Ain't No Such Thing As Superman" and "Western Sunrise".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Moving Target
Arista, 1982. Very Good+
An overlooked gem from Gil Scott-Heron's classic years on Arista Records – recorded at a time when the singer and group were strongly working in a jazzy vein – even though Brian Jackson isn't part of the lineup! Gil learned plenty of lessons from his time with Jackson – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good+
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album

It's Your World
Arista, 1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A standout set from Gil Scott-Heron – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of his other 70s work! This album's a double-length live set – one that has Gil taking on the familiar format of the 70s, and using it to really push the boundaries of his own music too! Most tracks are ... A set that wasn't initially conceived as a full album by Gil Scott-Heron – but one that's come to be an essential part of his catalog, thanks to the always-relevant title theme! Buddah/Arista, 1978. Very Good+
Some great tracks from the jazzy soulful genius of Norman Connors! Connors is one of the best crossover soul jazz artists of the 70s – with a masterful blend of styles that's matched by only a few other artists, like Roy Ayers or Leroy Hutson. This set includes tracks from his Buddah and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phyllis Hyman

Somewhere In My Lifetime
Arista, 1978. Very Good+
Warm and wonderful work from Phyllis Hyman – a set that's a lot more mainstream soul than her music of a few years before, but one that still shows a strong commitment to the more complicated styles of her roots! The sound here is full and proud – a nice extension of the work that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Afro-Cuban Band

Rhythm Of Life
Arista, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the many 70s disco projects recorded under the supervision of Michael Zager – and although this one isn't nearly as Latin as the name might imply, the record is a nice mix of clubby grooves and conga sounds, in the manner of some of the best Latin Hustle records of the time. New Worlds
Arista, 1978. Near Mint-
A bit smoother than some of the group's earlier work, but still plenty darn great – and in a way, there's a warmer, more soulful vibe going on here that really opens things up! The album kicks off with the incredible modern soul cut "Too Late" – a killer blend of jazzy soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Who's Zoomin Who?
Arista, 1985. Near Mint-
A huge hit for Aretha Franklin – and a record that brought her famous vocals to a whole new generation of listeners! Everybody Up
Arista, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
Still very much in the best mode as the rest of their 70s classics for Mercury Records – a sweet mix of ensemble funk with some upbeat styles that were perfect for the clubs! The group's shifted a bit by the time of this one and only album for Arista, but they've still got most of their best ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne Warwick

Dionne (Arista)
Arista, 1979. Near Mint-
One of those great 70s records that really reminds us that, way past Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick's a heck of a great soul singer! The album's a bit more polished than some of her other post-Scepter efforts from the decade – yet still comes off quite well, with Dionne really stretching out ... LP, Vinyl record album
