Boss Tenor

LP (Item 18301) Prestige, 1960 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Gene Ammons — Boss Tenor ... CD 7.99
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" style of rhythm that was used strongly at the start of the 60s – with Ray Barretto on percussion, alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The style is nice and echoey – a mode that works well not only here, but on most of the 22 other albums that Ammons went onto record during the next 2 years! Titles include "Close Your Eyes", "Canadian Sunset", "Hittin' The Jug", "Confirmation", and "Blue Ammons".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Purple label pressing in the purple painting cover, with light ring wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Our favorite side of Gene Ammons' talents – summed up nicely in a 2LP set! Ammons wasn't the first tenor player to work with a Hammond organ, but once the format gained popularity, Gene made a wise move to take it up – and it became a pairing that forever defined the later years of his ... Gene Ammons

Greatest Hits
Prestige, 1960s. Very Good+
While it's tough to think of a jazz player having "hits" – given the low sales of jazz albums, even in the 60s – it's still the case that Ammons' sound was so strong, and so soulful, he had plenty of fans in the crossover market for some of his bigger recordings. Swinging The Jugg
Roots, Late 60s/1976. Near Mint-
A very nice set of tracks released after Gene Ammons' death – but probably recorded at some point in the early 60s, given the sound of the session. Jug's playing with a groovy little organ combo (players uncredited), and the feel of the material is nice laidback and lougey. There's a tasty ... LP, Vinyl record album

A stone classic from Gene Ammons – and a record that introduced his talents to a whole new audience in the 60s! The album's a more laidback one than some of Jug's more hard-blown honkers – as you might guess from his hit rendition of the ballad in the title – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! Bull's Eye!
Prestige, 1968. Very Good
A sock-hard set of Detroit soul jazz that's one of Barry Harris' best albums of the 60s! Richard Groove Holmes

Spicy
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
Plenty of groove, and plenty of spice – a set that has the heavy Holmes taking off in his best 60s soul jazz formation! Prestige, 1971. Very Good+
Late great work from Ammons – an album done at the time of his funk sides for Prestige, but recorded in the style of his earlier years in Chicago!
