An obscure set, but a great one – and with a sound that's way deeper than you might expect! We only know Smoked Sugar from this one album for 20th Century – but far from being a one-off quickie session, the record's got a solid feel all the way through – the sort you'd expect from a group with a much larger role in 70s soul music! Backings are often tight and funky – never over the top, but definitely with a sharp edge – and the vocals really keep up with the grooves, managing to harmonize strongly, even in tricky moments – and as much at home in this setting as some of the bigger names from the east coast scene!
