Broken Shadows

LP (Item 1825) Columbia, Early 70s/1982 — Condition: Near Mint-
8 rare unissued tracks from Coleman's brief stint at Columbia, and stuff that was recorded during the same period as his Skies of America and Science Fiction LPs. The groups on the record are strong, and the playing is mostly in a pre-Harmelodic vein. Players include Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, Bobby Bradford, and Charlie Haden – and tracks include "Rubber Gloves", "Broken Shadows", "Happy House", and "School Work". Is this stuff on CD, or is this the only way you can find these tracks?  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ornette Coleman

Change Of The Century
Atlantic, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums of all time from the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman – an essential showcase for his early harmelodic concepts, but with a vibe that's maybe more pulsatingly rhythmic than on other albums from the time! Ornette plays his incredible plastic alto sax, which has ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1968. Very Good+

Ornette Coleman

Ornette On Tenor
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching ... LP, Vinyl record album

Empty Foxhole
Blue Note, 1966. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! Ornette Coleman

Skies Of America
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint-
A brilliant large ensemble work from Ornette Coleman – ambitious material recorded with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1964. Near Mint-
Breakneck live work from Miles Davis – and proof that his famous 60s quintet wasn't only just about mellow and spacious sounds! JJ Johnson & Kai Winding

JJ & Kai (aka Jay & Kai + 6)
Columbia, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
One of the flashiest Columbia sessions from the team of Kai Winding and JJ Johnson – but also one of the best! The record almost borders on gimmicky – with an 8-piece trombone section, and use of the unusual trombonium instrument – but thanks to some deft arranging, the sound is ... LP, Vinyl record album

The core groove is wonderful – very much ... LP, Vinyl record album
