Super Bad Is Back

LP (Item 1819) K-Tel, 1973 — Condition: Sealed

The second volume of this series was even better than the first, and contains more hard funky stuff, like "Jungle Fever" by Chakachas, "Doin' It to Death" by the JB's, "Theme from Cleopatra Jones" by Joe Simon, "Fencewalk" by Mandrill, and 16 other funky cuts from the likes of James Brown, Lyn Collins, First Choice, O'Jays, Chi-Lites, Curtis Mayfield, etc. Have yourself a funky K-Tel record party!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed copy!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Epic, 1980. Near Mint-
One of Mtume's sweet mellow soul records for Epic from the early 80's. Like Norman Connors, another soul jazz drummer who decided to go for a smooth soul approach, Mtume has a nice laidback feel on here, with good jazzy production backing up a number of vocal tracks aimed at the modern soul crowd. ... United Artists, 1971. Near Mint-
A sweet sweet set from the mighty War – and maybe the record that really has the group coming into their own! The record's got a stronger vocal presence than earlier War efforts, which is a really great thing – kind of a blend of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Chicano modes – all ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Flying High Together
Tamla, 1972. Near Mint-
Excellent 70s work by Smokey and crew – sort of their way of showing the emerging east coast vocal stars how much talent they still had! The record has a sweet slightly-modern sound, with an approach that hints at Smokey's later Quiet Storm sound, and arrangements by David Van De Pitte and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Uptown/MCA, 1993. Very Good+

Kid Creole & The Coconuts

In Praise Of Older Women & Other Crimes
Sire, 1985. Near Mint-
Later work by the one-and-only Kid Creole & The Coconuts – past his prime, but armed with the silly, and still very enjoyable hit "Endicott" – and other nice moments! The sound is cleaner and more streamlined by this point, namely the mid 80s – but the lively horns, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stephanie Mills

Sweet Sensation
20th Century, 1980. Very Good-
Stephanie Mills in fine formation here – working with the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, who helped the lady reach the heights of her career in the early 80s! The sound here is catchy and contemporary, but hardly ever too commercial – just relaxed and grooving, in a mode that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pointer Sisters

Steppin
Blue Thumb, 1975. Very Good-
The title and cover are very appropriate for this one – because there's a wickedly stepping groove to the set – one that makes the album the group's funkiest ever! Forget any thoughts you may have about The Pointer Sisters, or the cliches that later came to mar their career – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Soul Sister
Columbia, 1966. Very Good-
Aretha Franklin's definitely growing into her role as a soul sister here – a later date for Columbia Records that hints a bit at the sounds to come on Atlantic! Backings are by Robert Mersey and Belford Hendricks – both of whom use some relatively full orchestrations and occasional ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shalamar

Look
Solar, 1983. Near Mint-
One of the best from the point when Shalamar could still serve things up with the best – a lean, mean, pop-focused approach to 80s groove that's produced with some razor-sharp edges by Leon Sylvers. Howard Hewett's lead vocals have a lightness that really works well with the mix of keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Harold Wheeler/Charlie Smalls

Wiz – Original Cast Album
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
The original first recording of The Wiz – the super-soul musical that remade Wizard Of Oz for the 70s! The hits here are familiar, but the music is actually pretty great – handled by hip Harold Wheeler on most numbers, and really stepping forth with a nice mix of soundtrack grooves and ...
