Southern Comfort

LP (Item 18064) Blue Thumb, 1974 — Condition: Sealed
2LP Gatefold

A landmark album from The Crusaders – and a set that really has them sweetening up their groove with lots of tasty R&B touches! The guitar's a bit more pronounced in the mix on this one – setting up some tightly funky rhythms that almost seem to free up the horns even more for solo work – resulting in a sound that brings together all the best bits of the LA scene into one impeccable album of smooth jazzy funk! Titles includes their classic "Stomp & Buck Dance", plus lots of other nice groovers like "Double Bubble", "Time Bomb", "The Well's Gone Dry", "Whispering Pines", "Lillies Of The Nile", "Greasy Spoon", and "Super Stuff".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original pressing!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dizzy Gillespie

Musical Safari
Booman, 1961/1980s. Very Good+
Later issue of a crack live set that was recorded in 1961, when Dizzy had a young Lalo Schifrin in his group, playing the piano, and providing these great arrangements that broke Dizzy out of the be bop bag, and into a more Afro Latin groove. Leo Wright's on alto and flute, Bob Cunningham on bass, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Airto

Free
CTI, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Science Fiction
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint-
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Olinga
CTI, 1974. Near Mint-
Milt Jackson's third album for CTI – part of a wonderful run that really helped him redefine his sound in the 70s! Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges

Back To Back
Verve, 1959. Very Good+
Duke Ellington makes a rare Verve appearance on this classic album – and works strongly in the mode of earlier sides recorded for the label by Johnny Hodges! Savoy, 1952. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! This 2LP set is filled with tracks that were originally cut for Savoy Records during the time of Art's Surf Ride album for that label, but which were lost on the cutting room floor for years. Pepper's tone is fantastic – with more of an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Scott

Lonely Man
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent album of uptown soul from Freddie – recorded after his work for Colpix, with arrangements by Belford Hendricks and Garry Sherman, in a sweet 60s New York mode! Freddie's vocals are great – much more mature than before, with a mixture of deep and sophisticated soul that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sly & The Family Stone

Back On The Right Track
Warner, 1979. Sealed
Sly Stone's definitely back on the right track here – returning to the heights of his earlier powers in this late 70s comeback album for Warner Brothers! The record's got a lot of touches of the old Sly funky sound, but it's done in a slightly tighter style too – a bit more polish than ... LP, Vinyl record album
