Love & Peace

CD (Item 178467) Venus (Japan), 1982 — Condition: Used
$18.99 ...

CD

A wonderful later album from these two Coltrane bandmembers – reunited here in the early 80s, working in a mode that's very much in keeping with their rich spiritual jazz legacy! The group on the album's a quintet – with Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Richard Davis on bass, and Jean-Paul Bourelly on electric guitar. Sanders' majestic tenor solos really make the album sparkle – as he's blowing in a mode that feels a lot like Coltrane, circa 1963, touched with some of his own raspy soul, which makes for a different edge. Titles include "Little Rock's Blues", 'Hip Jones", "For Tomorrow", "Korina", and "Origin".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print 1996 Japanese pressing, includes obi.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Eddie Higgins & Scott Hamilton

My Foolish Heart
Venus (Japan), 2002. Used
Scott Hamilton and Eddie Higgins are a pretty great pair together – as you'll hear on this recent date for Japan's Venus Records! Hamilton's got a lot of tradition in his horn, and Higgins a fair bit in his piano too – although Eddie's way of shaping a tune is also very much his own ... CD

Eric Alexander

Gentle Ballads
Venus (Japan), 2004. Used
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the ... CD

Eric Alexander

Gentle Ballads 2
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used
The ballads are gentle, but the music is great – played in a strongly classic style on the tenor by the great Eric Alexander, all at a level that's much higher than you'd guess from the cheesy nudie image on the cover! The album's a great follow up to Alexander's first session on this vein ... CD

Speak Low
Venus (Japan), 2001. Used
Tsuyoshi Yamamoto on piano with Tsutomu Okada on bass and Yoshitaka Uematsu on drums. CD

Dear Old Stockholm
Venus (Japan), 2002. Used
Mellow magic from pianist Eddie Higgins – one of those players whose work seems to get even better with age – deepened a lot more in feeling than on his earlier records, and recorded beautifully by the folks at Venus Records! The album's heavy on ballads, but also features a few subtle ... CD

Venus (Japan), 2006. Used Gatefold
There's a bit of reverie here, but it's usually the swinging kind instead of the sleepy variety – thanks to a well-formed groove from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! The tunes certainly include a few ballads, but Richie usually takes them with a freely ... CD

I Wished On The Moon
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used
(Out of print, includes obi.) CD
Venus (Japan), 1995. Used
Bassist Bill Crow is perhaps best known for his work in the Gerry Mulligan group of the 50s, but he also had a great revival moment in the 90s – thanks to a well-penned autobiography, and a few great sessions as a leader like this! The album's got the same title as Bill's life story, and it's ... CD

Archie Shepp

Blue Ballads
Venus (Japan), 1995. Used
Blue blowing from Archie Shepp – a great set of ballads from later years, recorded at a time when Shepp had stepped back inside considerably from his styles of the past – but still brought a great depth of soul to his recordings! The tunes here are mostly familiar numbers, but Archie ... CD

Duke Pearson

How Insensitive
Blue Note (Japan), 1969. Used
Another bold step forward in the too-short career of Duke Pearson – and one of the last few records before his untimely death! The session departs from previous Pearson work by using vocals on most tracks – sometimes a solo singer, either Andy Bey or Flora Purim, and sometimes a larger ... CD
