On This Night

LP (Item 17582) Impulse, 1965 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold

One of the best Shepp records ever, and one of his most successful blends of the disparate influences that comprised his style. The group is a bit smaller than usual – which gives good focus to players like Bobby Hutcherson, Henry Grimes, and Joe Chambers. Shepp contributed some of his most haunting compositions to the set – including "On This Night", "The Mac Man", and "The Pickaninny" – and the whole thing's amazing enough to make you a Shepp convert for life. Whenever we get bogged down in some of his later recordings, we only need put this one on and feel refreshed!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Orange & black label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some wear and aging, some gloss peel at the spine and opening, and writing in marker inside the gatefold.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impro (France), 1981. Near Mint-
Leave it to Archie Shepp to deliver a tribute to Sidney Bechet with amazing results – a deeply spiritual session that's quite different than the trad jazz outing you might expect! Sure, a few of the tunes are Sidney's – but Shepp's renditions here are completely unique – ... LP, Vinyl record album
BYG/Affinity (UK), 1969. Very Good+
A rare live set – recorded in Algiers during the Panafrican Festival in 1969, featuring a set of work that is some of Shepp's rootsiest of the 60s! The recording features a core group of Shepp, Grachan Moncur, Clifford Thorton, and Dave Burrell – all joined by a host of Algerian and ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the hardest to find of the Shepp albums for Actuel, especially in this original format! These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the decade, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", and "My ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Tray Of Silver
Denon (Japan), 1979. Near Mint-
One of Shepp's excellent straight sides from the late 70s – and like the rest of the best, recorded as a Japanese-only session for Denon. The "silver" in the title is Horace Silver – as 3 of the album's 4 long tracks are Silver compositions – played by Shepp with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Doodlin
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint-
A very different album from Archie Shepp – and an introspective record that shows a whole new side of his talents! For the session, Shepp plays piano, not tenor – an instrument he handles with an angular, modern tone – one that seems to echo bits of Herbie Nichols and Thelonious ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Gary McFarland

Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a ... Shirley Scott

Great Scott!! (Impulse)
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
Swinging organ tracks from Shirley, with large band backing by Oliver Nelson, very much in the mode of Jimmy Smith's albums with Nelson on Verve! Includes a nice reading of the theme from "Shot In The Dark", plus "Hoe Down", "Shadows Of Paris", and "Great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! Duke Ellington & John Coltrane

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
Impulse, 1962. Good+ Gatefold
A seminal meeting of the old and new generations of jazz in the 60s – put together in perfect Impulse fashion! At some level, this is actually an early 60s John Coltrane Quartet album – with Duke Ellington sitting in for McCoy Tyner on piano, as that's the lineup on about half of the ... Curtis Fuller

Soul Trombone
Impulse, 1961. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best non-Blue Note albums from the early years of trombone giant Curtis Fuller – a definite cooker that more than lives up to its title! At his best, Fully often played his instrument with a style that was more like a trumpet than trombone – isolated notes, sharp sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than ... LP, Vinyl record album
