A great set of tracks that features Wayne's early work as a leader – all recorded for the Vee Jay label, either under his name, or with the Young Lions group. The material is fantastic, and is proof that even as a youngster, Wayne was one of jazz's best writers and players. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album
A perfect illustration of the rich new directions Wayne Shorter was taking at the start of the 70s – an amazing flurry of sounds and styles that's light years ahead of where he began in the 60s! Shorter's one of those players who was already great at the start – an amazing tenorist, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. Highlights include a vocal version of "Senor Blues" (with Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album
A stone killer from funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey – one of her early albums for Blue Note Records, and a set that's a perfect summation of the best sides of her talents! The album's got a slightly different feel than Bobbi's work with Larry Mizell – yet still sports a similar ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pivotal work from Freddie Hubbard – a tight, edgey quintet side with a sound that approaches the Blue Note "new thing" sound, but which stays just this side of the fence to keep in line with Freddie's other soulful work of the 60s! The group features some great work by James ... LP, Vinyl record album
A stone smoker from the great Stanley Turrentine – an album that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his other Blue Note dates from the time – yet, for some odd reason, wasn't issued until the end of the 70s! The group's a crackling septet – yet still put together relatively ... LP, Vinyl record album
Very nice 2LP set that collects some of Herbie's best 60s work for Blue Note – and which moves past the hits to feature some nice gems from hard to find albums. This work is a beautiful mix of tight soul jazz and freer modal playing – and nearly every track's a perfect example of why ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the most hard-hitting Jimmy McGriff albums of the 70s – a raw live date recorded in Newark – and a set that's a perfect bridge between the sharp soul of his Sue Records sessions and his later funk to come! The whole thing's got a gritty vibe the really recalls the sound of a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Material that was recorded in the early 60s, but not issued by Blue Note until later in the decade – when they were pulling out any Jimmy Smith session they had, in order to compete with the bigger hits on Verve. The record features 4 extended tracks, with an all-star jam session lineup that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Horace had more hits than most jazz musicians of his generation – and it's only fitting that this best-of set shows up all over the place when we go digging through jazz collections. Most of the tracks are from the late 50s/early 60s years – when Horace's group was a perfect blending ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note!
