Slow Freight

LP (Item 17482) Cadet, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+

A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a lot to the track! Ray's piano is in the lead, with a sinister soulful groove – and he's backed by his patented two-trumpet rhythm sound, played here by Art Farmer and Snookie Young – blasting away with a tightly vamping approach that's really in the groove. The rest of the record's great too – and other tracks include "The Fox Stalker" and "Return Of The Prodigal Son". One of Ray's best ever!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue fade label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and a trace of a price sticker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Swahili Strut
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent bit of funky stuff from LA trumpeter Bobby Bryant. The set was recorded for Cadet in LA, features tight arangements by Bryant, and a lot of nice long cuts that have a bit more of a groove than some of his other recordings (although most of them are pretty great). Woody
Cadet, 1970. Very Good+
The most obscure of Woody's albums for Cadet – and a bit different than the other two! One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Late 60s issue of a fantastic Coleman Hawkins session from the late 50s – recorded with a septet that included Idrees Sulieman, Hank Jones, JJ Johnson, and Oscar Pettiford – and with an open-ended tone that veers towards the Prestige blowing session mode, but which is also tighter, and ... Catalyst, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
