LaSo

LP (Item 17453) MCA, 1977 — Condition: Very Good

By any other name, this should be a Joe Bataan record – since Joe wrote most of the tracks, produced the records, and did the vocal arrangements. The sound is similar to Joe's Afrofilipino record, with a Latin groove that's aimed at the dancefloor, but which also has some nice soulful vocals. Marty Sheller did the musical arrangements, and he gives a nice kick to the material. Titles include "LaSo Square", "Happy Smoke", "Another Star", and a remake of Joe's great "Puerto Rico Me Llama".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some wear and a cut corner.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacheco

Latin Jam
Fania, 1965. Near Mint-
The title's no lie, since this is one of Pacheco's hardest swinging Latin jazz albums! The record's got a number of nice long tracks played by a very tight band, and it features loads of Pacheco's jazzy flute work on tracks like "Latin Gravy", "Asi Son Bonco", "Sugar Frost ... Ray Barretto

Guajira Y Guaguanco
Tico, 1964. Good
An early stunner from Ray Barretto – and an album that really has the percussionist coming into his own! There's only a bit of a trace of more popular Latin modes on this set – as Ray really takes off in this new territory of bold rhythms, dark inflections, and jazzy touches that ... Eddie Palmieri

Unfinished Masterpiece
Coco, 1975. Very Good+
Eddie Palmieri's work for the Coco label is some of his best of the 70s, and this album is no exception – and while the title may call the record "unfinished", it sounds pretty darn well done to our ears – far better than most other Latin sides of the time! The album includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Orquesta Aragon

Me Voy Para La Luna
Musart, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Orquesta Aragon's set to hit the moon on this one – posed on the cover in front of a cheesy rocket ship, bags packed, and instruments ready to go. The album's one of the group's more obscure ones, but it features plenty of prime mid 60s jamming, and a set list that includes "Aladino" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sentido
Coco, 1974. Very Good
Eddie Palmieri and the Coco label were a team that couldn't be beat – and this beautiful album is complete proof of that fact! Determination
Inca, 1982. Very Good
Beautiful later work from Sonera Poncena – a record that softens the edges a bit from their brassier sessions of the 70s, but which also comes across with an even deeper sense of soul! The salsa here is really wonderfully balanced – emotive, but never too much so – and set amidst ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mann

Say You Love Me Too
ABC, 1973. Near Mint-
Weird mix of Philly soul production with vocals that have more of a southern soul kind of feel to them. Charles' voice is nice and rich, and the tracks are arranged by Vince Montana & Norman Harris. Includes some nice ballads, and a few uptempo tracks, including a Philly version of Steely Dan' ... LP, Vinyl record album
