Most Minor

LP (Item 17396) Everest, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Great work by a player we've always loved – but who rarely gets his due! John LaPorta had one of the sharpest altos of the 50's, but for some reason, his talents were not nearly as recognized as those of similar players like Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano. His earlier work with Mingus has been reissued over the years, but this obscure 1958 session, cut for the Everest label, has always been darn tough to find. The session's a great introduction to LaPorta's work, and it's also one of his liveliest, in that it has less of the overly-academic tone that sometimes mars his recordings. On this one, he swoops around in sharp brilliant alto lines that are all his own – and which owe nothing to other 50's players, like Bird or Konitz. Great stuff throughout, and with the tracks "Diction", "Buzzin", "Searchin", "Decided", and "Make Mine Rare".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original stereo pressing – vinyl and cover are great!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Everest, Early 60s. Very Good+
Hard to figure out where this material is from – and the notes don't help much! Side one contains "Jitterbug Waltz" and "Music Matador" – both pretty clearly from the sessions Dolphy cut with Alan Douglas. Side two, though, features three tunes – "Juggin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Parker/Everest, Late 40s. Near Mint-
Early bop sides, not led by Miles as you might imagine from this package, but featuring him. Ernie Wilkins

Big New Band Of The 60s
Everest, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the few albums ever cut by Ernie Wilkins as a leader – despite his presence as an arranger on countless jazz sessions of the 50s and 60s! Ernie's got a real flair for a tight bounce at the bottom and unusual horn formations at the top – a style that reminds us a lot of Oliver ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Indestructible
Blue Note, 1964. Near Mint-
Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Song For My Father

An incredible record – the kind of album that only Blue Note could put out, and an instant classic that will sound wonderful forever! Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the most righteous albums that Max Roach ever cut – and a monumental jazz release from the heart of the Civil Rights era! Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige.
