Great work by a player we've always loved – but who rarely gets his due! John LaPorta had one of the sharpest altos of the 50's, but for some reason, his talents were not nearly as recognized as those of similar players like Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano. His earlier work with Mingus has been reissued over the years, but this obscure 1958 session, cut for the Everest label, has always been darn tough to find. The session's a great introduction to LaPorta's work, and it's also one of his liveliest, in that it has less of the overly-academic tone that sometimes mars his recordings. On this one, he swoops around in sharp brilliant alto lines that are all his own – and which owe nothing to other 50's players, like Bird or Konitz. Great stuff throughout, and with the tracks "Diction", "Buzzin", "Searchin", "Decided", and "Make Mine Rare". © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
