Swiss Movement

LP (Item 17054) Atlantic, 1969 — Condition: Very Good

The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some breakout solos that show that all players are still deeply committed to a strong jazz sound. Titles include "Cold Duck Time", "The Generation Gap", "Kathleen's Theme", and their great version of "Compared To What", with the famous vocal by Les that made the track a soul jazz vocal hit!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & green Rockefeller pressing. Cover has some some wear and aging, a few small seam splits and a piece of clear tape on the back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chris Hinze Combination

Bamboo Magic
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the few American albums issued by this Dutch funky flautist who cut more than his share of heavy discs on the other side of the Atlantic. Hinze was part of the lowland funk scene that included John Lee & Gerry Brown (both of whom are on this record), and his music shares a similar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Fontessa
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good-
A classic set of high-class jazz from the MJQ – one that shows John Lewis' growing compositional skills, and the band's always tight ability to work in a compressed chamber format. Features the extended "Fontessa" suite, plus the tracks "Versailles", "Angel Eyes" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Stompin' At The Savoy
Atlantic, 1974. Sealed
A great blend of older jazz styles and the sweet 70s funk of Robin Kenyatta – served up with a hip sort of sparkle overall! There's a few familiar jazz modes in here that definitely live up to the spirit of the title – but most of the record is more open, laidback, and somewhat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Right Now
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Another great groover from Herbie's Latin days! The band has a very unusual modal sound, with Herbie's flute next to vibes by Hagood Hardy, guitar by Billy Bean, and percussion by Willie Bobo & Patato Valdes. Includes a nice version of "O Barquino", plus the cuts "Cool ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz & Romantic Places
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+
Jazz in romantic places, but some pretty groovy ones too – a host of global destinations all referenced in the track selection for the set! Rufus Harley

Bagpipe Blues
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good-
An amazing record, from an amazing player – the mighty Rufus Harley, heard here on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – as well as bagpipes, his "trademark" instrument! Don't be put off by the bagpipes, though, because Harley plays in a righteous soul jazz groove, and uses the ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Lewis

John Lewis Piano
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good-
One of the strongest sessions recorded by pianist John Lewis in the 50s – a date that shows depths of his talents that run even greater than his work with the Modern Jazz Quartet, quite possibly because is work on piano is at the forefront of the record throughout! There's a sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Spectrum
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold
A very full-on hard heavy fusion album! Drummer Billy Cobham lays down some massive hard beats, while Tommy Bolin wails away on guitar, Jan Hammer pounds on electric piano, and Lee Sklar noodles on electric bass. 2 cuts feature a different lineup with Joe Farrell and Jimmy Owens – but the ... Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's last truly fantastic albums – a set that still has all the amazingly messed-up qualities of his best late 60s work – delivered with the honest heart and sense of soul that always make us love his music! Houston Person

Truth!
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+
One of Houston Person's first forays into the jazz funk sound that other Prestige Records players were picking up at the time – a sweet little set with some nicely extended tunes!
