Candido – Featuring Al Cohn

LP (Item 17030) ABC, Late 50s — Condition: Used

LP, Vinyl record album

4.70 6

One of the jazziest Candido albums ever – a tight little 50s set that features the master congolero working with a small combo that includes Al Cohn on tenor, Dick Katz on piano, and Joe Puma on guitar! The sound is nice and stripped-down – bristling with a percussive approach to the grooves that really seems to inspire the soloists – especially Cohn, who's playing here with a tone that we didn't expect! The session jams along nicely throughout – and tracks include "Perdido", "Candi Bar", "Mambo Inn", "Candido's Camera", and "Indian Summer". (In nice shape!)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Solid State, 1969. Good+ Gatefold
Stone lost Latin funk! This one's Candido's rarest – and it's a killer batch of conga-heavy grooves, recorded in the late 60s for Solid State, and featuring a very groovy set of mod Latin arrangements by Joe Cain. The band features organ, guitar, bass, horns, and some upfront conga solos ... LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless, 1982. Near Mint-
Quite late in his career for Machito – but a great set nonetheless, with some hard-hitting Latin jazz arrangements that are some of his best work in years! Tracks are long and very jamming – performed live by a big band with Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet, and lots of nice long and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1974. Good+
Stellar live recording featuring the funky vibesman in a nice long electric set with a totally solid feel throughout. The LP includes an amazing 13 minute take on his cut "Manuel Deeghit", plus a 7 minute version of "The Prophet", and a 6 minute version of Joao Donato's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Unlike the mellower Breeze from the East LP (another Tjader "eastern" session), this one's got some very lively Latiny stuff – despite the orientalist theme of the LP. There's a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The ... LP, Vinyl record album
