Pure Sound Of The Purifys

LP (Item 17007) Bell, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+
James & Bobby were one of the classic male soul duos of the 60s – and this album of tight tracks is right up there with similar work by Sam & Dave, Bob & Earl, and Mel & Tim. The album doesn't include their big hit "I'm Your Puppet", but it does have a lot of other nice moments, like a remake of "Shake A Tail Feather", and the cuts "Let Love Come Between Us", "I Take What I Want", and "You Don't Love Me".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original stereo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Patrice Rushen

Posh
Elektra, 1980. Very Good+
Nothing posh about this one – as the album's an all-out, all-access affair – a great way for anyone to get into the grooves of the mighty Patrice Rushen! Patrice is at the height of her powers here – equally magic on keyboards and vocals, and coming up with groove after groove in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Ice On Ice
Mercury, 1969. Very Good+
Killer stuff – as Jerry's getting the full early Philly treatment here, with arrangements by Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, and Roland Chambers, and production by a young Gamble and Huff! The sound isn't nearly as icy as the old Vee Jay days – but that's fine with us, as Jerry is nice and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Last Poets

Oh My People
Celluloid, 1985. Very Good+
A later album from the Last Poets – recorded after their classic run in the 70s, but still pretty nice overall! The record's a bit of an unusual one, in that it shows a bit of the creeping "street" element that the Poets would absorb into their work after being dubbed as the "G ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Wells

My Claim To Fame
AVI, 1978. Very Good+
The first album from Chicago soul singer James Wells – an artist with vocals that often run much deeper than some of his disco contemporaries at the time, and which really get a showcase here on some of the longer songs! There's often a lot of disco at the start of the records – long ... LP, Vinyl record album

Reaching For The Sky
Capitol, 1978. Very Good+

ABC, 1978. Very Good+
Although not as instantly captivating as their work for Stax, this set for ABC is still a pretty darn great group soul album! The group haven't lost their touch vocally – and Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds are still incredible singers that push smooth soul to a whole new level. The album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Commodores

Hot On The Tracks
Motown, 1976. Near Mint-
Early funk from the Commodores – back in the days when Lionel Richie could still get up and groove! We'll be the first to admit that we're sometimes put off by the group, given their later hits, but it's records like this that actually remind us how great they could be – a mixture of ... Smokey Robinson

Warm Thoughts
Tamla, 1980. Near Mint-
Warm thoughts, and equally warm vocals – thanks to the legendary Smokey Robinson, who's still sounding great here at the start of the 80s! The record's surprisingly charming – and has the laidback, mellow-going sort of sound that Robinson first crafted on Quiet Storm – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1979. Very Good+
One of Lou's classics for Philly International – a warm mix of smooth soul and adult vocals, handled with some great arrangements by Dexter Wansel and Thom Bell. There's less standout singles on this set than previous Philly records, but Lou's class and quality makes nearly every track come ... LP, Vinyl record album

Silver Convention

Silver Convention (Midland)
Midland, 1976. Near Mint-
A smash hit from Silver Convention – thanks to the dark pop disco hit "Get Up & Boogie", the leadoff tune on this surprisingly strong set! The strength of the album really comes from the masterful blend of strings, beats, and piano from arranger/producer/keyboardist Silvester ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hutcherson

San Francisco
Blue Note, 1971. Very Good+
Genius, pure genius! This album's possibly the most perfectly realized set from the team of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Harold Land on reeds – a pair who hit territory that's slightly funky, but which is also still touched by the modal spiritualism of some of their earlier work together! ...
