Shirelles Sing To Trumpets & Strings

One of the earliest albums of 60s girl group soul by the lovely Shirelles! Thankfully, the "trumpets & strings" in the title is a bit of a misnomer – hardly the brass and violin session you might expect, and more of a deeper soul set overall! The girls do a great job of mixing the rough with the smooth – usually by balancing a strong lead with supporting harmony vocals – and the production from Luther Dixon really keeps things fresh – often using just a bit of backings well behind the vocals, and keeping things far from the too-pop modes of other girl groups of the time. Titles include "Mama Said", "The First One", "What A Sweet Thing That Was", "Rainbow Valley", and "What's Mine Is Yours". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
