In Concert

LP (Item 16921) Cadet, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Given that the Soulful Strings were really just a studio side project of the Chi soul arranger Richard Evans, it seems sort of strange to have them cut a live LP, but the session, recorded at Chicago's London House, works quite well, and has a bit more lively feel than some of their classic studio recordings. The group includes Phil Upchurch on guitar, Bobby Christian on vibes, and Lennie Druss on woodwinds – and tracks include a version of "Listen Here", plus "Oboe Flats", "There Was A Time", "Pavane", and "MacArthur Park".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soulful Strings

Another Exposure
Cadet, 1968. Near Mint-
Hip hip stuff from Richard Evans and the gang at Cadet Records! The record is the second outing by The Soulful Strings – a group that kind of started as a studio side project, but who became a surprisingly popular act during the late 60s. The album includes some excellent original tunes by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield & Linda Clifford

Right Combination
Curtom/RSO, 1980. Near Mint-
An album of duets that Curtis cut with rising disco star Linda Clifford – who by 1980 may well have been earning more money for Curtom than Curtis! The album's about half disco tracks, half soul duets in a Chicago mode – and arrangements are by Gil Askey and Norman Harris. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Street Corner Symphony

Harmony Grits
Bang, 1975. Near Mint-
Funky uptempo vocal group soul – in that "doo wop for the clubs" kind of style that a some east coast acts were using at the time. The record was produced by Michael Zager, and it's sometimes got a bit too much focus on the grooves to showcase the harmonies properly – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Liquid Liquid

Liquid Liquid EP
99 Records, Early 80s. Near Mint-
A groundbreaking little record – and one that's hardly ever been matched again! Liquid Liquid sprang onto the scene with this amazing debut EP for 99 Records – a set that's got a wicked blend of funky drums, post-punk darkness, and this cool criss-crossing of modes that perfectly sums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Jasper Isley

Caravan Of Love
CBS, 1985. Near Mint-
A huge 80s moment for the Isley Brothers empire – a set that has Ernie and Marvin Isley stepping away from the main group with Chris Jasper – to reinvent their sound for the 80s! The record still has all the slinky soul and upbeat funk of the Isley material from the late 70s – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Persuasions

We Came To Play
Capitol, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
A beautiful group soul vocals effort from the Persuasions in the early 70s – working in a throwback acapella mode, but still with a fresh feel – thanks to a hip dawn of the 70s sound, and a stripped-down feel that you'd probably have never gotten back in the day! It's amazing how fresh ... LP, Vinyl record album

Commodores

Caught In The Act
Motown, 1975. Near Mint-
Wicked early funk from The Commodores – a group that spent so much time on pop ballads in later years, it's hard to believe they could be this sharp and hard-edged! There's plenty of that bass-heavy style that would later dominate many Motown combos at the end of the 70s – but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Timi Yuro

Soul
Liberty, 1962. Near Mint-
"Soul" is right – and "excellent" is also! Timi Yuro's early 60s work is fantastic – and is part diva bluesy soul, ala Etta James or Lorez Alexandria, and part country soul, ala Ray Charles or Brook Benton. Her voice is incredible, with a clear tone, yet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Martin Denny

Another Taste Of Honey
Liberty, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A sweet follow up to Martin Denny's Taste Of Honey album – one that's got a great blend of piano, vibes, and percussion – all used in a way that's almost more jazz-like than some of Denny's earlier work! The formula works great to transform a host of 50s and 60s tunes – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les Baxter & 101 Strings

Latin Holiday (aka Que Mango)
Alshire, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
A repackaged version of the album Que Mango – a later album, but one that still features Les doing some great Latiny bits – heading up the 101 Strings ensemble, for a sweeping and groovy kind of sound! The whole album's very similar to some of Les' Capitol work from the early 60s, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
