We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used
for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with,
so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.
Used Vinyl Grades
Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for
the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-")
the grading for the vinyl.
If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws,
these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that
since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with
the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records
are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible
for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt
to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
Additional Marks & Notes
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially
if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record.
This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip,
cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
A killer funky number from the late King years – hard, fast, and with an instrumental intensity that's hardly been matched since – and presented here in classic fashion – with 3 parts! 7-inch, Vinyl record
"Goodbye My Love" is one of James' ballad soul tracks – not bad overall, sung in a deep soul style that we always like – but the reall killer is "Shades Of Brown", a very groovy organ instrumental that often gets overlooked, and which has a hard-wailing, nice vamping ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Killer funky stuff from JB, and just about everything you'd want from him: hard grooves, heavy politics, and lots of nice funky playing by the band! Also the inspiration for the great Talkin' Loud label! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Stone funky! "Popcorn" is a massive instrumental classic that we hardly need to tell you about – and it's backed here by the great instrumental "Chicken", which features some nicely snapping drums, punctuated by tight horn parts, and a nice jangly guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Two nice ones! "Cry Cry Cry" is a beautiful tear-jerker – produced with strings and orchestral parts behind James, and stunning raw vocals right up front. The flip's an instrumental, with a very horn-driven groove, and a smoking organ solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record
The title says "disco", but the track is prime P-Funk all the way! Lots of nice bass work at the bottom, and a trio of female vocals keeping things real over the top – and really getting the most out of George Clinton's funky hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Enough soul power to run a whole generator! James is in stunning form with the JBs – and the whole thing grooves with a choppy guitar riff that you'll recognize immediately from a million 80s hip hop samples. The whole band has "Got the Feelin!", and the track jams nicely with ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the all-time James Brown classics! Hard wailing guitar riffs, popping off at popcorn speed! Searing sax solo by Pee Wee Ellis! Slammin' hard drum beats! What more could you ask for? Both cuts are great – and this is about as funky as you could get for late 60s JB! 7-inch, Vinyl record
