Dadiva

LP (Item 16743) Som Livre (Brazil), 1983 — Condition: Near Mint-
A great bit of 80s soul from Jorge Ben – a record that has ol' Jorge looking a bit new wave on the cover, but which is filled with grooves that are every bit as strong as any of his late 70s work! The soul style is very firmly in place here – a bit more mainstream than before, but in a way that helps Ben forcus his sound strongly – almost going for a pan-global approach to the music, given the way you can appreciate these tunes from a groove-heavy perspective, even if you don't know the language! His vocals are as wonderful as always, and although the sound is tight, the production's never too commercial nor too slick – a really great balance that comes off beautifully. Titles include "Ana Tropicana", "Energia Bom Bom", "Rio Babilonia", "Conquero", "Eu Quero Ver A Rainha", and a remake of "Taj Mahal".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original Brazilian promo pressing. Includes the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, some spotty aging, and a promo stamp in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sublime work from this mid-70s soundtrack – complicated and jazzy, in a mode that recalls the best work from the time by some of Brazil's more famous singers. Elis Regina performs "Um Por Todos", Rita Lee sings "La Vou Eu", Cassiano sings "A Lua E Eu", and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aquarela Brasileira
Som Livre (Brazil), 1988. Very Good+
Roberto Menescal and Luis Avellar arranged and play on this record and Menescal also did the production. It is a nice record of mainly quiet ballad-type songs that seem to be weaved into medleys and are used well to show off Santiago's rich voice. The record contains some Veloso and Jobim ... Maria Bethania

Ciclo
Philips (Brazil), 1983. Very Good+
A nicely rootsy little album from Maria Bethania – recorded during a period when some of her music could often sound much fuller and more electric! The album's got subtle help from Toninho Horta, Dori Caymmi, and Guto Graca Mello – all of whom arrange Maria's vocals in a sophisticated ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roberto Menescal

Bossa Nova
Imperial (Brazil), 1964. Very Good
Early bossa album by the man who was one of the leading instrumentalists behind many of the bossa era's best singers. The set's fairly mellow, and all instrumental. Menescal plays guitar, and other instrumentation includes vibes & piano. The tracks have a light lilting bossa feel, with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful early showcase of the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim – and one of the best late 50s albums from the lovely Sylvia Telles! The album's got a wonderfully gentle feel – one that's a far cry from some of the more emotive female vocal work that had come from Brazil in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

The cover definitely reflects that 80s origin of the album – but as usual with Djavan, there's a lot more depth here going on than most of his contemporaries ever had to offer!
