CD

Originally: 18.99
The second smoking album from Captain Sky – a Windy City funk legend, and one who's cut from some of the same cloth as Bootsy Collins or Rick James! Like both of those artists, the Captain's a pretty imposing figure, with a bit of future flash to his looks – and while he uses lots of the basslines that might tie him to Bootsy and the P-Funk universe, he's also got a groove that mixes in some of the more sophisticated modes you'd know from the Chicago scene at the time! There's almost a late Curtom feel to the record – tight funk, a bit faster than early in the decade, but still not really disco – and with some mellow midtempo tracks that balance things out beautifully – and really show Sky evolving past the style of his first record. Tracks include "Moonchild", "Fearless", "Cream & Sugar", "Rebirth", "Hero", "Double You SKY", and "Ker-Runch".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Portrait
Capitol, 1992. Used
The smooth debut of Portrait – a soul harmony group with an approach that's just right for the early 90s years – often set to the kind of beat-heavy rhythms of the new jack generation, but with a way of coming together that goes back to the old school too! This approach seems to work ... CD

Sophisticated Soul
Motown, 1968. Used
Sophisticated soul is right – as The Marvelettes were one of the groups who really helped give Motown a sense of class in the 60s – but who could also balance their sense of poise with some nice depth on their vocals! The album's a great one for the trio of Wanda Rogers, Anne Bogan, ... CD

After 7

After 7
Virgin, 1989. Used
A super-huge debut from After 7 – a group related to Kenny Babyface Edmonds, who's very much at the helm of the set alongside his partner LA! The LA/Babyface groove is very much in place here – but with that crackle that shows the approach of new jack touches, and less of the mellower ... CD
