Music That Inspired Buena Vista Social Club

LP (Item 165481) Not Now, Late 40s/1950s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
A compilation of Cuban classics, with selections by Ruben Gonzalez, Ibrahim Ferrer, Tito Puente, Beny More, Perez Prado, Omara Portundo, Celia Cruz, Bebo Valdes, Sonora Matancera, Aldemaro Romero, Vicentico Valdes, Machito, Lecuona Cuban Boys, Compay Segundo, and others.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

El Bestial Sonido
Vaya, 1971. Very Good+
One of the real standouts in the career of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a record of incredible tightness, and one that set a whole new level for Puerto Rican salsa in the 70s! There's still a few traces here of the Latin Soul years – sometimes in the rhythms, at other times in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1965. Very Good
A really pivotal album in the career of Mongo Santamaria – one that has Mongo stripping down the groove, kicking up some jazz, and mixing together soulful styles that brought him to the top of the Latin crowd of the 1960s! There's a tightness here that goes beyond any of Santamaria's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
Damn wonderful solo work from Chaka Khan – a record that holds onto all the best funky elements of her 70s music with Rufus – but also finds a way to put the lady even more strongly out front! There's maybe a bit more of a clubby vibe here than before, but never in a cheesy or ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lennie Tristano/Buddy DeFranco

Crosscurrents
Capitol, 1949/1972. Near Mint-
Although this set was issued in the 70s, it features some excellent rare early work by Tristano, originally recorded for Capitol in 1949. Ron Carter

Anything Goes
Kudu, 1975. Very Good+
Ron Carter gets sweet and funky on this 70s classic for Kudu Records – a set that's a fair bit different than some of Carter's acoustic trio sides of the decade, or some of his more high-concept work in recent years! The approach here is free and flowing – larger arrangements penned by ... LP, Vinyl record album
