LP (Item 16468) MPS (Germany), 1980 — Condition: Very Good+

A later record by drummer Charly Antolini, and still a very tasty bit of MPS jazz – with a mix of styles that recalls his classic albums for the label, and a list of players that includes Dieter Reith on keyboards, Heinz Von Hermann on saxes, and Lee Harper on trumpet! There's a great Latin-y groover called "Senor Hoche", a nice fusion cut called "Like A Swimming Pool", and the drums-only "Drums A Capella".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Zbigniew Seifert

Man Of The Light
MPS, 1976. Very Good+
A surprisingly great set from violinist Zbigniew Siefert – a player who uses his instrument in ways that are a bit different than some of his European contemporaries! There's less of a tendency to jam on this set – yet Seifert still plays with a nice sense of boldness, really feeling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Red Garland

Auf Wiedersehen
MPS (Germany), 1971. Near Mint-
A rare early 70s session from pianist Red Garland – one of his first in many years after a strong 50s run for Prestige! The record shows Red losing none of his warmth and grace on the keys – and he's set up in a great trio with Sam Jones on bass and Roy Brooks on drums – both ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funky electric magic from the mighty Dave Pike Set – the ultra-cool combo the American vibist worked with while recording for German label MPS! Oscar Peterson

Tracks
MPS (Germany), 1969. Near Mint-
A solo sparkler from Oscar Peterson – recorded in a flurry of excellent late 60s recordings for MPS, and done in a warmly rhythmic mode that puts Peterson's solo work right up there in the ranks of Tatum and Garner! The production on the album is immaculate – done with a depth that ... LP, Vinyl record album

MPS, 1976. Near Mint-
A stone classic from pianist Monty Alexander – a live date recorded for MPS in the mid 70s, and a set with even more fire than his studio sides for the label! The sound here is quite freewheeling at times – not funky, but in a very romping, gutbuckety mode that marks Alexander as a ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson

Bad Benson
CTI, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy ... Sonny Stitt

Only The Blues
Verve, 1957. Very Good-
Probably the most classic of Stitt's sides for Verve – and certainly the one that gets rated time and time again by jazz collectors. We think it's pretty darn great – although we always wonder why folks don't give Stitt's other sides for Verve as much of a chance, because they're all ... LP, Vinyl record album
