Dedication Series VII – Village Concerts

LP (Item 16419) Impulse, 1966/1978 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

Way more than just another 70s 2-fer of earlier work by a 60s group – as this entire set was unreleased until this issue – and stands as a perfect counterpart to the other Village album issued by Albert Ayler on impulse! Ayler's brother Don is on trumpet, and the rest of the group includes Henry Grimes (or Alan Silva), Michel Sampson, and Beaver Harris. Titles include "Light In Darkness", "Divine Peacemaker", "Angels", and "Omega Is The Alpha". The gatefold opens to some nice liner notes. Great all the way through, and a oft-missed, but essential slice of Ayler's career!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some ring & edge wear and half split top seams.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ESP, 1964. Very Good+
Seminal ESP work from Albert Ayler – a unique session done as a soundtrack to a short (and weird!) film from experimental director Michael Snow! The lineup is a bit different than some of Ayler's other ESP albums – and features Don Cherry on trumpet and cornet, John Tchicai on alto, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Albert Ayler

First Recordings (GNP)
GNP, 1962. Near Mint-
Early work by Albert Ayler – and very very striking! The setting is very spare, with only bass and drums backing Ayler up – and the way the album is mixed, Ayler's solos dominate the tracks in a way that isn't always the case with some of the more group-driven later work. His tone is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah Sanders

Jewels Of Thought
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful reunion of Pharoah Sanders and vocalist Leon Thomas – and a set that captures a lot of the same energy as the pair's previous record – Karma! Thomas' vocals are in wonderful form for the set – stretching out soulfully on the extended classic "Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-H ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

More Sorcery
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record that's sort of a follow-up to Gabor's excellent Sorcerer LP – and like that one, features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The album features a two-guita ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt & Paul Gonsalves

Salt & Pepper
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Head to head blowing from Sonny Sitt and Paul Gonsalves – just the kind of twin-horn performance that Stitt was famous for in his live battle days, and one that also reminds us that Gonsalves can be a very loose swinger when he wants to be! The tracks are all long, and played with the sort ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint-
Stripped-down Count Basie from the start of the 60s – a great little set that has the Count working with some of the best players from his larger group, in a session of even more intimate small combo material! Shirley Scott

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Truly the best of the best of Coltrane's years at Impulse – as the collection has a strong focus on the longer, more spiritual numbers that he was free to develop while working for the forward-thinking company. The set's stuffed with great numbers – and includes classics like "Afri ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael White

Go With The Flow
Impulse, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pretty hard-grooving set from Michael White – a mixture of funky fusion tracks and west coast soul jazz numbers, performed with bass, Fender Rhodes, guitar, and a heck of a lot of percussion! White's violin is grooving over the top of the more uptempo tracks, riffing away in washes of ... LP, Vinyl record album
