Mose Allison (That's Jazz)

LP (Item 163989) Atlantic (Germany), 1960s/1970s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
(Mid 70s issue in the die-cut gatefold cover, with some surface wear, lightly bent panels, and a tiny corner tear at the die-cut.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Thesaurus

Jan Akkerman & Kaz Lux

Eli
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
Jan Akkerman did plenty of unusual projects in the 70s, and this album may well be the best of them – an outing with vocalist Kaz Lux, whose unique phrasing really helps give the music a lot of focus! Akkerman's still hanging nicely between rock, funk, and jazz – but the use of vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Evans

Svengali
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players ... LP, Vinyl record album

Max Roach

Drums Unlimited
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
The drums are certainly unlimited here – and the album's a really unique one, in that it shows Max Roach in 2 different settings – one with a group, and one that's simply solo! Art Of The Improvisers
Atlantic, Early 60s/1970. Very Good+
Great lost work from Ornette Coleman – material recorded in New York and LA during the years 1959 through 1961 – never issued at the time, but pulled together in this wonderful package at the start of the 70s! Although not recorded as an official album, the record stands easily with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Crosswinds
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A masterful album from Billy Cobham – and maybe the best 70s record to really demonstrate the unique place he found for himself in 70s fusion! Shorty Rogers

Swinging Mr Rogers
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+
A standout set from Shorty – tightly arranged numbers performed by a quartet that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Pete Jolly, Curtis Counce, and Shelly Manne – all working with Shorty in perfect west coast form! Modern Jazz Quartet

Third Stream Music
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
A seminal album that defined the fresh sound of a whole new generation in jazz – that "third stream" movement that was different from the cool jazz of the west coast, and the fire of New York! The style here follows that same mix of jazz and higher-concept elements you'd hear on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1965. Near Mint-
