Bohannon

LP (Item 16297) Dakar, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-

A massive amount of fast funk groovers from the mighty Hamilton Bohannon – just the kind of skittish, upbeat, and totally amazing tracks that have made him a legend for years! The sound is really stripped down – usually just bass, drums, and guitar – wrapped together in this groove that's super tight, but not slick at all – like someone had dug deep into the best resources of the funky 45 underground, then pushed them to the limit! The guitar work alone is completely amazing – razor-sharp perfection at a level that blows away any previous chicken scratch lines – and titles include "Can You Feel It", "Think Of Me", "The Funky Reggae", "The Bohannon Walk", "Bohannon's Beat Part 1", and "Gentle Breeze".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmie & Vella

Heartbeat
Imperial, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Lost male/female duet record, with a sing song soul sound that's a bit like Peggy Scott and JoJo Benson, or other pop soul duets of the time. A bit sweet, and a bit pop/soul, but with some nice moments. Bobby Womack plays guitar and contributes the track "People Make the World", while ... LP, Vinyl record album

Exit 9

Straight Up
BRC, 1975. Very Good+
The one and only album by Exit 9 – an obscure funk combo who recorded this rare set for Brunswick in 1975! Solomon Burke

We're Almost Home
MGM, 1972. Very Good+
Rootsy soul album from Solomon, and perhaps his most stripped-down recording from the old days. In a way, these MGM recordings uncover more of his soulful vocals than the Atlantic albums did, although the setting's a little bit less traditional for Solomon. Includes a number of original cuts, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good+
Brilliant work from Philly arranger Dexter Wansel – an album that moves the focus back to soul a bit more than on his Life On Mars set, but which also keeps in plenty of jazzy touches! Beverly Glen, 1985. Very Good+
An obscure later album from west coast soul group Chapter 8 – recorded after Anita Baker had left the group to move out on her own, but done for the mid 80s Beverly Glen indie, where Baker had also gotten her start as a solo act! Lonely Man
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent album of uptown soul from Freddie – recorded after his work for Colpix, with arrangements by Belford Hendricks and Garry Sherman, in a sweet 60s New York mode! Gracias
Fania, 1979. Very Good+
